What hosts, presidents, and liars have in common

What all three have in common is that they are all better at listening than the average person. What makes them willing to put more effort into listening than others is that they have a greater motivation and incentive to get to know you. Politicians can benefit from understanding the needs of their constituents, as can scammers.

Why does listening take effort? The truth is that most of us are not really listening. We grab clips of information, and use our own subjective assumptions or guesses to fill in other parts that we don’t know much about. As a result, what we think we hear is often very different from what the other party actually said.

Why [the important thing to say three times]? It's a bit like the way you capture fingerprint information or face ID on your phone, you need to scan two or three times to capture enough correct information.

This is a good reminder that we are not as good at listening as we think. We always think that what we hear is always slightly insufficient. If we can have such an understanding, maybe we can be willing to humble ourselves when communicating. Take your own knowledge for further confirmation.

[Are you saying...that's what you mean?]

[Sorry I don't fully understand what you just said, can you explain it more carefully?]

There is a saying in the Bible: [Be more focused on listening to this matter, not in a hurry to speak, and not in a hurry to get angry. ] is really a very wise reminder.

Knowing that we need to work on [listening] makes us better communicators.

Because even hosts, presidents, and crooks don't do their jobs through good eloquence, but through better listening.
