What all three have in common is that they are all better at listening than the average person. What makes them willing to put more effort into listening than others is that they have a greater motivation and incentive to get to know you. Why does listening take effort? The truth is that most of us are not really listening. We grab clips of information, and use our own subjective assumptions or guesses to fill in other parts that we don’t know much about. As a result, what we think we hear is often very different from what the other party actually said.
