11/24 (Thursday)

At 19:49, a high-rise fire broke out in Jixiangyuan Community, Urumqi City, Xinjiang. The fire was put out by the fire brigade at 22:35, resulting in 10 deaths and 9 injuries.

11/25 (Friday)

  • 6:00: The Urumqi Municipal Government issued an announcement to report the fire situation, confirming that the fire was caused by the fire of the plug board in the residents' homes. The statement mentioned that "Jixiangyuan community is a low-risk area of the new crown pneumonia epidemic, and residents can go downstairs for activities." This caused netizens to complain that it was a lie, alleging that Jixiangyuan was classified as a high-risk area, and residents could not freely enter and exit the unit building, resulting in the inability to escape in time , Coupled with the fact that the fire escape was blocked, it was impossible to drive into the community in time, which led to the tragedy.
  • 22:00 : An article titled " The road is open, they don't run " on WeChat, in response to the statement of the Urumqi municipal government, listed the chat records of the Jixiangyuan Neighborhood Committee in the WeChat group asking residents not to go downstairs, the community A post in the resident’s circle of friends pointed out that the gate was locked, etc., accusing the government’s excessive prevention and control that caused the rapid expansion of the fire and caused unnecessary casualties. This article quickly spread across the Internet and was taken off the shelf.
Supplement: A follow-up article pointed out that the authenticity of the evidence in this article was insufficient. The door of the community unit was not locked, and the gate of the community was originally very narrow. Qun's Auspicious Garden is not Urumqi's Auspicious Garden...and so on. However, it is currently impossible to verify whether the claims of the two parties are true or false.
  • Evening : The WeChat video account began to widely spread a number of short videos of the Beijing Tiantongyuan community, including residents and the neighborhood committee’s fierce theory of why the closure was prosecuted, and the neighborhood committee’s private discussion on how to use methods to deal with disobedient residents, causing netizens to be furious.

  • Evening to early morning : People took to the streets in various parts of China to mourn the victims of the fire in Urumqi, protest the nucleic acid testing and the dynamic reset policy. More than 100 people gathered on Urumqi Road in Shanghai, demanding the unblocking, freedom of the press and freedom of speech. Some even called for "Xi Jinping to step down." At first, the police did not stop the slogan, but later some protesters were taken away by the police. People in Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Xi'an and Gansu responded.


  • Among Chinese tertiary institutions, Nanjing Institute of Communication and Communication took the lead in launching a mourning and protest movement at night. Students spontaneously held up blank papers to express their silent protest.   • Shanghai : At noon, people in Shanghai took to the streets to demand the release of those arrested last night. In the afternoon, the Shanghai police began to block the roads, and some people were carried away. Plainclothes policemen mixed in with the crowd. They pulled up the blockade at night and removed the Urumqi Middle Road sign.

  • Beijing : Students of Tsinghua University gathered in front of the Bauhinia Garden cafeteria to protest, shouting slogans such as "democracy and the rule of law, freedom of expression." Hundreds of students gathered to support the demonstration. Students chanted "free speech" and sang "The Internationale". The deputy secretary of the Party Committee of Tsinghua University rushed to the scene of the protest and promised to hold a university-wide discussion. Many communities in Beijing communicated or fought with the neighborhood committees on their own and were unblocked. The exact number is unknown, but there are more than 30 reported online. According to the account of Twitter, Mr. Li is not your teacher, more than a thousand people gathered in Liangmaqiao, Beijing to mourn the Urumqi incident, shouting the slogan "I want nucleic acid!   • Guangzhou : People in Haizhu District took to the streets to protest and demand that the lockdown be lifted.   • Chengdu : Crowds gathered at Wangping Street in Chengdu City, Sichuan Province at night. Among the slogans they shouted were: "Human rights", "No life tenure", "Oppose dictatorship", "Freedom of speech", "Give me freedom or give me death" Wait. The video shows that the crowd may be thousands of people, and the word "Chengdu" appears on the advertising banners on the street.
