【Thinking】Street shadow and retreat

(edited)
Hong Kong has imposed street shadow restrictions on buildings since 1969 to ensure that the increasing number of high-rise buildings will not affect the sunlight level and air circulation of adjacent streets.

In order to meet the "Street Shadow Law", builders will reduce the construction area with the height of the building. The exterior of the building adopts a "retreat" design, that is, it becomes narrower and narrower.

The relevant regulations were abolished in 1987, and since then, more and more "screen buildings" have appeared in Hong Kong.

Most of the existing buildings with unique appearance influenced by the "Street Shadow Law" are located in old urban areas, such as Wan Chai, Mong Kok and Sham Shui Po.
