Reading pen farming | Cultivate good reading habits with 3W3H

Summarized six tips - 3W3H - hurry up and get back to the book!

This article shares various tips that have been "tested in the flesh" to help develop reading habits. Of course, the effect must vary from person to person, and I hope everyone can choose the way that suits them.

❶ Environment (Where)

I used to like to sit on the sofa and read with books in hand. Later, most of this scene was arranged by me to chase "leisure" books; if I wanted to read "cultivation" works, I was used to a set of desks and chairs, with bookshelves on the table. On , there are lamps, drinks, a piece of paper and a pen, that's enough!

When reading, be sure to move your laptop, tablet, and mobile phone to other places, at least out of sight and out of reach . For this purpose, there are two desks in the room, one for reading and one for writing.

❷ Time Budget (When)

We keep accounts and budgets for money, and the same concept applies to "time."

With that much fixed time each day, realize that time is a limited resource . Compared with various gatherings of relatives and friends, "date with a book" is now clearly and specifically included in the schedule, and other chores are not allowed to interfere.

This also helps to make the abstract "I want to read a certain book" into the concrete "When ❷, where ❶ I want to read" practice. Turn uncontrollable big goals into small executable steps , reflecting the thinking of " Bullet Arrangement Thinking Technique [1] ".

-

❸ The two-minute rule (How long)

Have you ever felt this way? Everything is difficult to start, and it is not difficult to do.

Everyone has "neural routines ," likened to the human version of computer programs that direct our thinking, feeling, and behavior, allowing us to perform routines subconsciously in some degree of automation .

The "two-minute rule" mentioned in " Atomic Habits [2] " is based on the above principle. The secret is to stop before you feel exhausted ; the point is not to do "good" things, but to develop "start" first. After getting used to it, gradually expand to ten minutes, half an hour, one hour...

-

❹ Reading aloud (How to start)

It can be taken in combination with the two-minute rule before opening.

Perhaps due to the influence of Mark 's book club [3] , whenever I want to concentrate—mostly when I just grabbed a book—I will start by reading aloud , and feel that it helps me to get into the situation as soon as possible.

Although the reading speed will be slowed down, it can practice the sense of language. You can look at this exercise in a variety of hypothetical contexts (e.g. press releases, audiobooks); some sentences are very long and need to be split, paced, light or heavy so that they can be done in one go.

So the two-minute reading has become a kind of opening remarks, establishing your own sense of ritual .

-

❺ Zero to whole (How often)

Because of the relationship of starting an e-book reader [4] , one machine is in hand, and the fragmented time (for example: taking public transportation) can also be used properly, and small meals are often used.

Habit formation depends on frequency, not time. Repeating this action many times enough to automate it becomes an unthinking mental shortcut, and it becomes a habit.

What to read

Another benefit brought by e-book readers [4] is that "grab alternates" become easier. Carry it with you, the whole backpack is your library, great!

I prefer to read two books in exchange during the same period, and the mood also switches, one book is more "cultivation" and the other is "leisure".
