One time I used the phrase "If need be" in an English manuscript. When a peer reviewed the manuscript, I was asked, "Don't you think this sentence is strange in English?" In fact, I asked this because I have never actually seen it used by foreigners, but If you read it, you will find that this is a very common phrase, and it is better than what is taught in textbooks.
