What is a Sergu Education?

The concept of Sudbury Valley education originated from a private school in the United States, the Sudbury Valley School .

Established in 1968, Church Valley School is located in Framingham, Massachusetts, USA. It is the first school in the United States to allow students to learn independently. The school has been in operation for more than 50 years, and countless graduates have gone on to study or pursue careers they love, and lead rich and meaningful lives. There are currently more than 50 organizations around the world operating under the Serguo model.

Cerro Valley School features the following:

1. Self-directed learning

Segu has no compulsory courses, but students-led learning, choosing daily activities according to their own interests. As long as it does not affect others or violate the rules of the community, students can decide for themselves how to live each day. They are free to initiate any activity of interest and are free to participate in activities proposed by other members. The adults serving in Segu are called "clerks" and their role is to assist students when they need them.

Seguo School believes that children have strong curiosity and strong learning ability, and will want to develop into independent and capable people. Segu provides a safe and nurturing space for children to play at their own pace and way, practicing truly personal learning.

The Sergu School treats every interest, activity, and knowledge as equal, and no interest is higher or more important than the other. Segu believes that learning is inseparable from play and life, and the activities that children choose spontaneously are the most meaningful and effective learning for him.

Children have endless time to explore their own interests, and children’s daily living arrangements are determined by themselves. The staff will not deliberately guide children in a specific learning direction, but follow children’s preferences and choices, support them in learning, and assist them when they need it. .

2. Self-assessment

Segu has no external assessment, that is, the staff will not use external standards such as tests, exams, and scores to assess children. The role of staff is that of facilitators, not evaluators.

Segu believes that children can judge their own efforts and progress. However, if students need it, they can ask staff for advice to improve their work. If students want to assess themselves through quizzes, they can also ask, and the staff will help.

Three, mixed age

The students of Seguo School range in age from four to eighteen years old, regardless of grade, and learn together on campus in a mixed-age form. Segu does not divide classrooms by grade. The campus is like a "big family", and classrooms are classified by activities, such as music room, art room, library, computer room, kitchen, hall, etc. Children of different ages do what they like, the little ones learn from the teens, and the older ones play with the little ones.

4. School Meeting

Cyprus Valley School is jointly governed by members of the community (staff and students), each with equal voting rights, to participate in the formulation of school-wide affairs, such as formulating rules, adding facilities, organizing events, revising rules, planning school financial expenditures, recruiting and Re-election of staff, etc.

The school council is held weekly, and all staff and students are free to participate and vote to decide school affairs by a minority. Since there are more students than staff, they really have the right to govern the school.

The experience of the Seir Valley School shows that older children tend to be more actively involved in school meetings, while younger children only participate in issues that directly affect them.

5. Judicial Committee

Segu has a judicial system, commonly known as the Segu Court, to deal with day-to-day disputes among its members. Church Valley Court is held daily and consists of an elected chairperson, clerk, children on duty and a staff member. The court will investigate the written complaint and ensure that the procedure is correct, and the member who is violated by the referee must bear the consequences.

Segu Education in Hong Kong

A group of educators and parents piloted Segu Education in Hong Kong in 2017, and in 2018 formally established a small Segu community .
