【Sunset Small Activities】Learn about the history of Tuen Mun in Hong Kong from the sunset, and know Hong Kong from the sunset (3) - 20/9/2021

(edited)
The answer to last week's event: Ho Wo Street, Tuen Mun, Hong Kong! Meanwhile, a new sunset mini-event has begun!

I don’t know if last week’s sunset mini-event was difficult, whether it was on Liker Social or Penana , the number of participants on all platforms combined was still only one person. Due to the fact that no one guessed correctly, Likecoin was not sent out. I hope more people will participate in the new event.

Question: Where was the photo above taken in Hong Kong?
Answer: Ho Wo Street, Tuen Mun

Unless you live in the New Territories West[1], even Hong Kong people don't quite understand what kind of place Tuen Mun, Yuen Long, and Tin Shui Wai are, let alone passengers who come to Hong Kong by plane - instead of traveling so far, It's better to go shopping in the city center, or visit more famous tourist attractions. To be honest, Ben Xiong is also the Hong Konger who doesn't understand the New Territories West very well. Fortunately, his boyfriend likes to drive around and watch the sunset, so Ben Xiong got the opportunity to know this new world.

Haohe Street is an industrial area, so the surrounding scenery is full of industrial style.
How to get there without driving:
Take bus K52 from Tuen Mun MTR Station to Mong Hau Shek Station and walk for about 30 minutes.

Ho Wo Street not only has an extra-long coastal embankment, but also a large meadow and a large row of palm trees, making the scenery look a bit like Okinawa, Japan, adding a layer of exoticism to Tuen Mun. For most people in Hong Kong who like Japanese culture, during this period of time when they rarely travel abroad due to the epidemic, they may be able to imagine themselves having a trip to Japan when they come here.

At the same time, the opposite side of Ho Wo Street is the Hong Kong Airport, which adds to this beautiful scene the leisure scenery of aircraft landing. Next to it is the Tuen Chi Tunnel, that is, Tuen Mun to Hong Kong Airport. After the tunnel was opened earlier, it has facilitated the citizens of the New Territories West to get to the airport, and it has also made this already very popular check-in hotspot even more popular.

The red dot is Hohe Street.

Although Ben Xiong still does not understand the current Tuen Mun, but Tuen Mun occupies a small seat in Hong Kong history in Hong Kong history. For example, Tuen Mun So Kwun Wat has unearthed relics and relics of the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. In 1514, when Portugal sent a fleet to arrive at Tuen Mun and occupied Tuen Mun, a stone pillar engraved with the Portuguese national emblem was erected there to show the occupation.

Later, in 1521, the Portuguese tried to force their way into Hong Kong and go to Guangzhou for trade, which led to a confrontation with the then Ming Dynasty navy, known as the Battle of Tuen Mun in history. After the battle lasted for 40 days, the Portuguese army fell into a hard battle and retreated to Macau, and then began the tangled story of Portugal and Macau.

As for the story of Hong Kong and Portugal, is it over? Do not. Before Hong Kong officially became a British colony, some British businessmen first relied on Portugal to establish a foothold in southern Asia. Later, after the British occupied Hong Kong, the Portuguese did not forget to invest in Hong Kong, so that Hong Kong has many buildings funded by the Portuguese. Such as the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Caine[2] and St. Joseph's College. However, Portugal will shift its target to Hong Kong, which is also related to the "Jiashu typhoon" in 1874. The disaster at that time almost destroyed the whole of Macau, killing one third of the city's people. Coupled with the chaotic political situation in Macau at that time, the Portuguese who valued their interests gradually turned to Hong Kong for development.

I have to admit that although Tuen Mun is not a major development city in Hong Kong now, this place has become one of the places that interest Ben Xiong based on these historical and modern changes alone.

[1] According to the administrative division of Hong Kong , the area includes Tsuen Wan District , Kwai Tsing District , Tuen Mun District , Yuen Long District and Islands District . It is also one of the constituencies directly elected by the Legislative Council of Hong Kong .

[2] The Portuguese will be baptized as Catholics as soon as they are born, and they have to worship on holidays, so they built many churches to facilitate their worship of God, such as the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Caine Road.
