一個故事不僅要有「寫故事的人」、「說故事的人」, 更需要一個「聽故事的人」。

[Film Review] "The Truman World" True but not Real

"The Truman World: The Truman Show", the title is very interesting, Truman is Truman, the sound is the same as True man (real person). But in this reality show, who is not a real person? Or only Truman is the most real, and the others are just real actors (true but not real). Since the world's first child adopted by a company, Truman has lost the right to know the real world, the arrangements of parents, the establishment of childhood best friends, the choice of girlfriends, the decision of preferences, the influence of the environment, all those who have Not in the director's mind...

Since the world's first child adopted by a company, Truman has lost the right to know the real world, the arrangements of parents, the establishment of childhood best friends, the choice of girlfriends, the decision of preferences, the influence of the environment, all those who have The unwilling and adventurous heart that does not meet the director's will or will let Truman get out of control will be extinguished one by one with the cooperation of all the extras.

The teacher extinguished Truman's heart for sailing adventures, his father's shipwreck made Truman traumatized to himself and the sea, and the best friend who could not arrange for progress instills the best and best ideas in his small town every day (the best sunset in the United States) , Even his own wife told Truman from time to time not to fantasize and recognize the reality. The funniest part was that when Truman was going to buy a plane ticket, the travel agency actually posted a poster of lightning bolt to the plane. How can auspicious posters appear on the occasion of selling air tickets?

Is it possible to sell the ticket?

But if you watch the film carefully, there are actually a lot of these hints, and it is nothing more than the director saying with great confidence that if Truman wants to leave, if he has a little adventurous spirit or observation, how can he not see this falsehood The world, but people all want to live a comfortable life, so Truman is just an ordinary person who is easy to accept reality and tends to reality.

The more peculiar part of the whole film is the people who are standing in front of the TV. On the one hand, they question Truman's life and hope that Truman can really see the lie, but on the other hand, because of the climax of the plot arranged by the director ( Such as when my father met again in the bridge section) and moved to tears. These audiences in front of the TV are unconsciously manipulated by the TV station just like the actors of the reality show. Using the ratings to affect the mood of the audience, and the placement of products in the Truman show, whether it is on-screen or off-screen, or even watching movies, we are all monitored characters in a sense.

The only difference between this may be what the director said. In the world where Truman lives, he has his protection, and the outside world is also full of lies. It is not as real as my fictional town, and the outside world is hypocritical. It will really hurt Trumen. Although Trumen, who stayed in the small town, is surrounded by lies, but it is the focus of attention and the collection of thousands of pets, and will not be "really" hurt.

Is there another real world behind the end of the world of lies or a bigger lie?

Maybe it's human nature! No one likes the feeling of being deceived, but having the courage to face the truth after being deceived is another matter. The movie uses a phrase that Truman often said when he said goodbye to his neighbors:

Good morning, and in case I don't see ya, good afternoon, good evening, and good night!

"In order to avoid that I may not see you in the future, I wish you good afternoon and good night" as the curtain call before Truman left. We don't need to know if Truman will regret facing the truth in the future, or if Truman just moved from a smaller prison of lies to another world of larger lies. But what we do know is that Truman is ready to face this new world (whether or not it's just another, larger false world), because this sentence is both sincere and polite, because I sincerely wish you well At the same time, I knew clearly that we should never meet again.

This also shows that Truman, in a sense, is dealing with these hypocritical courtesy every day, greetings from neighbors day after day, twins who want to buy insurance, newsstand bosses, courtesy of the company's revolving door, etc. Even if the outside world is full of lies, Truman has long been trained to deal with falsehoods. Don't forget, he is an insurance practitioner (I mean he speaks very well XD).

Looking back at the film, you will find that reality has long since become similar to the one depicted in "The Truman World". I think everyone has experience in posting about children, life, and the privacy of boyfriends and girlfriends on the Internet. In particular, many exaggerated behaviors don’t make you think how these posts exposed to the public will end in the future? Won't your kids care when they grow up to be self-aware? Don't you care if your boyfriend and girlfriend break up? The more frightening thing is not to delete the post, because now social media has big data in the background, every move on the Internet has been monitored for a long time, and even Google knows where you go and what you do today. (Before getting off the bus or MRT, Google would ask you if the bus was congested, if the MRT was crowded, and even if you had a meal, it would automatically mark the restaurant for you, ask you if it was delicious, and how many people were there at that time).

Children influenced by community (control)

Is this what the director said? Everyone wants to be a star, and everyone wants to be noticed by everyone. The only difference from Truman is that even if it was monitored by FB and Google, it was my own choice. I posted with my knowledge. I sold my privacy voluntarily, and I was truly free to choose. It's not like being manipulated in a movie. Is it really?

It is recommended that you watch a Netflix documentary "Smart Society: The Dilemma", which mentions the degree of mastery of users in modern social media, such as the information that pops up based on the same information entered by different people using Google in different places. In fact, it will be different due to different search habits and living environment; or FB will push different news and advertisements selected by users, or users will make a difference in order to meet their preferences for traffic such as click-through rate and so on. Changes in behavior, just asking for more likes or feeling anxious because too many people don’t like it. How does what happens in these realities differ from the monitored life described in "The Truman World"?
