Feelings of the 39th Hong Kong Film Awards in 2020

I generally don't have the habit of watching live events, but this year I watched the live event specially, maybe because of last year's sports, maybe because of this year's epidemic, or maybe because of the film festival trailer.

There is live on YouTube, click it directly, and it will start on time. Nice background tones. Er Dongsheng appeared, full of expectations. Unexpectedly, as soon as he came up, he went straight to the point, and all the awards were announced in a round of mouth, and the whole process only took 11 minutes.

The big winner of this year's film festival is none other than "Youth as a Teenager". I haven't seen the show, so I can't comment. If I hadn't seen this play compete for the Academy Awards, to be honest, I really don't know that this is a "Hong Kong movie", and I can't even see the shadow of a co-production. This movie, whether it is actors or content, I think it is a movie from mainland China, I really don't see any relationship with Hong Kong. After checking it, it turned out that the director of the film, Zeng Guoxiang, said that the director of Hong Kong was fine. The film's winning so many awards may also have something to do with the director being Zeng Zhiwei's son. I don't know the inside story, and it's not my concern.

Personally, I prefer literary films. "You Are a Young Man" is not my cup of tea, and I am not very interested in the theme of school bullying, so I am not very interested in this film. As mentioned above, because I haven't seen this film, I can't comment on how it actually is and why it won so many awards. However, in my opinion, it is really unpleasant for a film that is not so Hong Kong to win so many Academy Awards.

I'm not an old fashioned person, and I don't have any opinion on movies in mainland China or other places. I also know that times are changing and everything is changing, but there are certain things that need to be adhered to. I remember that Chen Jiashang, the chairman of the Academy Awards, once talked about the restrictions on the selection of the Academy Awards. He said that the selection scope of the Academy Awards is not all Chinese-language films, but Hong Kong films. If the film festival is getting less and less important because Hong Kong films are getting less and less important, then accept your fate.

Therefore, the Academy Awards are the Hong Kong Film Awards. Whether you say it is cramped, or you say it is not aggressive, in short, the focus is on Hong Kong movies.

What is Hong Kong Film? First of all, it should be in Cantonese; in addition, it should have a Hong Kong flavor. People who like to watch Hong Kong movies can generally smell a unique taste of Hong Kong movies. It's a human touch, born out of the local terroir, rooted in the local taste, and this taste is really different from other places. The most attractive thing about culture is this unique taste.

I have no intention of comparing and distinguishing cultures from different places. All I want to say is that not all Chinese films are Hong Kong films. This year's Academy Awards are disappointing, not just because of the cancellation of the physical awards ceremony due to the new crown epidemic, but because such a non-Hong Kong film has won so many awards.

The emergence of co-productions is both a crisis and an opportunity for Hong Kong films. The huge mainland market obviously provides more space for Hong Kong film industry workers, but on the other hand, in order to cater to this market, and because of the mainland's capital, creativity has been restricted a lot. Not just this "Youth of You".

In co-productions, I like the combination of Hong Kong male and mainland female stars. Zhou Xun, Tang Wei, and Zhang Ziyi are all popular heroines. It's not that I don't like them, I also think they are very attractive. But the problem is that with their presence, the Hong Kong flavor will be weak. The more they appear, the less Hong Kong flavor. Some big directors I like very much have made some blockbuster films, and the meaning of co-production is obvious. Shooting big scenes, big times, it should be very enjoyable to shoot. Unfortunately, I don't want to watch it anymore.

Those blockbusters seem to be too main themes, without the breath of life, without the flavor of Hong Kong, and also lost the soul. The unique temperament that attracted me is gone.

It is a great fortune in misfortune. It seems that some rookie directors do not have the determination to go north, or they may just have no chance. Anyway, they stay in the country and make low-cost productions, but they retain that unique flavor very well. For example, last year's "The Fallen Man", this year's "Mai Luren" and "Golden City" all have a strong Hong Kong flavor, with humanity and humanity. Since the anti-amendment movement last year, Hong Kong people have paid more and more attention to the establishment of an independent "yellow economic circle", emphasizing that "Hong Kong saves itself". Perhaps, Hong Kong flavor can benefit from this and be preserved. As long as there are still these movies, Hong Kong movies are still worth looking forward to.

What I also want to say is that, apart from the three places on the Taiwan Strait, Chinese people have footprints all over the world. In today's Internet age, can niche productions also be distributed globally? I think, there must be a lot of audiences around the world who want to watch "Mai Luren", right?
