Lori Gottlieb uses a novel-like writing style, occasionally interspersed with humorous insights and easy-to-understand psychological concepts, allowing readers to be inspired by life's predicaments and observations of human nature through life story after story. "Hey, are you okay?" Podcast S2E28

This book, I recommend that you use the "listening" first

The book to talk about this time is "Maybe You Should Talk to Someone: A Counseling Psychologist, Her Psychologist, and Our Lives"
Original title: Maybe You Should Talk to Someone: A Therapist, HER Therapist, and Our Lives Revealed

My first encounter with the book myself was the original Audible audiobook
It is also one of the few books read aloud by the author himself (after checking again during the correction of this article, it was found that it was the voice of a professional reader)
She has imitated her psychologist and the way of speaking of different cases. Even if she can't understand everything, she can listen to the story smoothly.

When I found out that there are also e-books released in Taiwan, I quickly started and asked Mr. siri to read aloud. After listening to the translator's writing, the writing was quite smooth, and it also allowed me to understand more about the story structure of the whole book. After deciding to choose this book as the storytelling content I used the mooink e-book reader to enlarge the word and line spacing and read it slowly. On the one hand, I reviewed the entire story line again, on the other hand, I wanted to try to slowly restore the dyslexia after Xiaoyu entered the chaos.

For details on how I personally use the Readmoo e-book service and Mr. Siri to read text aloud, you can go to the fifth episode of the first season of the reading club of the first season of the book club.

[Audible audiobook platform shopping tips for saving money, as well as personal consumption experience]

Audible has two parallel sales methods: "single purchase" or "subscription points for book exchange". New members register and subscription system usually have points to exchange for books. It is recommended that readers who want to experience the original audiobooks can compare them. Sometimes, audiobooks with large lengths and long hours (biographies or novels of 20 hours or more), it will be much more cost-effective to use the subscription system to exchange points!

When I first started listening to podcasts, there were not too many audiobooks in Taiwan. I listened to "Born a crime in the name of my mother" by the Bailinguo Reading Club and started using Audible.
During the period of my own subscription, the platform will also send additional exclusive audio content for subscription members "6 out of 2" every month, because I listened to some interesting juvenile novel digressions, "Born a crime in the name of mother" as the The first English audiobook is really good Trevor Noah tells the story of his own growth in person. It is easy to switch between many different local languages. It is very interesting. If you are interested in English audiobooks, you can go to Facebook and search for "Aying Love Listening Books - English Audiobooks" This community has a lot of recommended book lists and money-saving information. After using the Audible subscription system for a few months, I found that Readmoo Chinese books can be read aloud by Mr. Siri. selection of audiobooks,
After all, listening to non-native English still consumes a lot of power (brain-burning),
Just unsubscribed from Audible membership, and now I only occasionally buy an original audiobook to listen to

As far as I have listened to the original audiobook once, read it aloud by Mr. siri, and read the text by myself, the thoughts are concentrated, concentrated, refined and refined in one sentence:
This book is for anyone who has ever felt "life sucks", "what a fucking world", "why are there idiots around me?"

I use the terms I used in the program " Hey, are you okay ?". Patients, companions, professional helpers, and those who are practicing on the road to becoming helpers can all get a lot of ideas from this book.

Make me smile cover

The cover is the first impression of each book on the reader. The yellow background, a box of removable toilet paper, the toilet paper box is light blue, and there are three used toilet paper ravioli next to it.

I think the cover designer has completely caught the author's special identity as "psychologist". Yellow is a slightly warmer and neutral color. In my impression, the clinics and consultation spaces I see are decorated with beige or a little gray. In addition to the main white color, lights, furniture and decorations will have yellow elements

The main visual of toilet paper as the cover is very interesting. This should be the largest daily consumable used in psychiatric clinics and psychological counseling. If it were me, I would add a trash can that looks very useful and beautiful on the back cover. Because the three toilet paper ravioli reminded me of the automatic opening and closing trash can lid that my psychologist broke, she gave up and put away the high-tech trash can lid XD

Anyway, I like this cover

Unique novel-like multi-line story structure, smooth and coherent

The story structure of this book is very strong. Look at the chapter titles of the table of contents and you will find that it is actually more like a novel

This is very different from the way most psychology-related popular science books are organized by topic or emotion.

Also because the writing style is really like a novel, readers can't help but read one story after another. In order to avoid too many thunderstorms, I will quote the copywriting of Xinglu Publishing House and the already published trial reading and book summary content on the book buying platform. I can find it, plus some thoughts after listening and reading it three times by myself

If you are concerned about thunderstorms, you can pause here <br class="smart">read the book and then come back to read or listen to my thoughts

before becoming a psychologist

The legal system in the US is different from that of the medical school in Taiwan. Taiwan is a high school graduate or equivalent. The US is a post-baccalaureate program, that is, you can apply for a law school or medical school after graduation.

After entering the school, you can only practice after taking courses, internships, and getting a license. Therefore, many people will return to campus after leaving the society for a while. Whether it is an academic research institute, a law school or a medical school that requires a lot of social practical insights, they will see various Students of different age groups are very different from the existing system in Taiwan in terms of training process and practice ecology.

There are many psychiatrists and psychologists posting about the current helper training system in Taiwan. Those who are interested can search for it, but for those who need help, it is actually a bit complicated. The question of "who should I turn to?" often arises. Electricity If enough (spiritual), I will slowly organize my own vernacular version

Back to the book's author, Lori Gottlieb, Lori Gottlieb didn't start her career in the direction of becoming a psychologist, but stumbled and found her passion in life. She found she wanted to reach out to people. True Life Stories Those rough lives, wounded souls, and what she was curious about: fragile humanity

As for what she was doing before becoming a counseling psychologist?
Please read the book by yourself~

The main storyline of the entire book

The whole story of the book can be roughly divided into three plot lines

  • Lori's own career, the training process of choosing to become a psychologist, The Psycho of a rookie trainee psychologist
  • Facing the great changes in life, Lori found that even though she was a licensed professional psychologist who was treating others, she couldn't pull herself up from her depressed mood.
Started to consult with psychologist Wendell through the introduction of the peers I knew
  • Her four patient patients:
Including a irascible Hollywood producer who made a popular movie series, a newly married girl who was diagnosed with terminal cancer soon after, and a girl in her 30s who was gradually approaching the end of her life in her prime years. She felt that her life was rotten, and she had no family or friends around her. A 70-year-old grandma, who plans to commit suicide on her next birthday, has a chaotic life after a series of emotional setbacks.

About the word "patient"

Helping people in Taiwan may refer to patients, cases or seekers depending on the occasion. This book chooses to use the word "patient" from the beginning to the end, so this time I will use "patient" instead of "case" which I use more often. Avoid confusion. In the area of professional ethics, share patient stories with moderate adaptations and withhold all personally identifiable information

Painless reading experience for understanding professional concepts in psychology

Lori's career experience accumulation and personal writing interest before becoming a psychologist have long been in serial column articles

One of the things that impressed me most about this book is that Lori is very good at explaining psychological principles, nouns and views of different schools of masters in the story in a very vernacular way, including Irving Aaron, Carl Jung, Carl. Carl Rogers

Whether it is a Muggle psychology, a novice or a veteran in the process of reading or listening, they can find a perspective of watching the story outside the perspective of Lori's writing. This perspective may be Lori's humorous self-deprecating, a third person drawn out, or a substitute for her. Describe the case story

No matter who it is, it is a difficult thing for the parties to choose to walk into the consultation room.

Every patient has different reasons and different purposes for entering the consultation room. The only thing in common is this: these people are just like you and me. They are all flesh and blood people.

Some people may question, is it reliable for a psychologist like Lori to consult another psychologist?

As far as I know, many helpers were once helpers
It is because they have experienced the pain in life that they are willing to embark on the path of helping others.

In addition, psychologists have a "supervision" system. In the vernacular, they are another senior psychologist. They discuss the patient's treatment plan with professionalism and experience. Looking for a supervisor will cost you money, which is often more expensive than a consultation. To become a supervisor, you also need to pass an exam licensed

So back to the question just now, is such a psychologist reliable?

This is very subjective, but I personally think that a helper like Lori who is willing to expose his vulnerability is usually a helper who takes care of the patient in front of him.

Of course, in the process of consulting Wendell as a professional,
Lori understands very well what therapeutic techniques Wendell is using for her and what issues to focus on. There are inevitably many inner theaters asking herself, "If I were my own psychologist, what would I do?"
I really like Lori's descriptions of these little theaters, it's humorous and makes the story more interesting

Why do psychologists often need counseling?

I think it's the same as people need a mirror to see their own reflection

Some concerns about the "expert Internet celebrity phenomenon"

Lori Gottlieb became a 'best-selling author' for the book
Last year, with Guy Winch, another psychologist who is also a writer
Partner on a podcast " Dear Therapists "
Contribution to answer audience's troubles

In recent years, there have been many writers, internet celebrities or various new media in Taiwan with expertise in psychiatry, neuroscience, psychology, psychologists, and physician licenses. I love reading books, so after watching a lot of this podcast, the calculation Fa also recommended several different fans, ig and youtube channels for me to watch. I can only say that everyone has stories, but really not everyone can tell a good story XD

Personally I would like to remind that,
Whether it's images, words, or sounds created by images, and formal entry into a therapeutic relationship are two completely different things

What is publicly spoken, called propaganda, called stories, and called health education, can be regarded as a kind of knowledge content, a kind of opinion, a kind of comment, but it is completely different from "executive therapeutic behavior"

As mentioned earlier, everyone is a flesh-and-blood person, and they all have their own personalities, standpoints, opinions, and preferences. I personally think that walking into a consultation room or clinic with an impression of an internet celebrity or idol is a huge difference to the patient itself. a little dangerous

The doctor-patient relationship boundary in the consultation room

The therapeutic relationship between the patient and the psychologist is full of special existence in the entire medical system. This relationship basically exists only in the consultation room at that time.

Discussing feelings about the dilemma of life together

In that time and space, for the patient, it is to open the scars in the heart, debride, re-medicate, and rebuild the wound. It may not be very comfortable to heal again, and it is very likely that it will not heal immediately. That is to say, the predicament of life It won't be resolved after a few hours of talking

If you don't win or lose, ask someone to solve the problem for you in one o'clock,
Dare to have such a good health record? (Taiwanese: How can there be such a good thing?)

In Lori's words:

"What makes psychotherapy challenging is that it requires patients to see themselves in ways they would normally not want to.
Although the psychologist will hold the mirror with empathy as much as possible, it is still up to the patient whether he is willing to take a good look in the mirror.
They have to decide for themselves whether to turn their heads away or stare in the mirror and say, "Wow! how so! What to do next? 』

Counseling is a means, a method, to help patients return to their lives

The point is that after walking out of the consultation room, the patient brings the awareness and ideas learned in the consultation room to his ordinary life, trying to take action and make some changes

The psychologist can give the patient a completely detached companionship, listening, and understanding. The whole process of undertaking is very power-consuming for the psychologist, so it basically does not occur in ordinary interpersonal relationships. At the same time, this therapeutic relationship involves many personal secrets, Privacy, the dark side...and more

You can play football with your orthopaedic doctor, and you can meet a family doctor on the road for a conversation, but the psychologist is outside the consultation room and basically has no overlap with the patient's life circle.

I got lucky with my psychologist for a long time

To me, a psychologist is more like a coach and a mirror that teaches me to see the core of life's predicaments and tells me what she sees in my eyes and which I often don't notice.

There is a passage that Lori said to her patient Rita, and my psychologist said something similar, Lori said:

"Pain can be self-preservation, and stopping in a melancholic state can be some form of escape.
Safe and secure in a shell of pain, without having to face anything or enter a world where you might get hurt again.
Rita needs that voice in her heart that hits her: I'm not going to do anything because I'm not worth it. "

The world is really cruel, it won't treat you better just because you work hard

This passage lets me know that I'm still on my way to remove this protective case, at least, on the way

Xiaoyu never really left my life

When the seasons changed and the autumn started, my symptoms of depression became unstable. The emotional and physical symptoms took turns tossing and turning, and the waves continued to invade year after year. I didn't really "get used to it".

The third text reading process was also because the content of the story evoked a lot of topics that I was discussing with the psychologist. I often read a short paragraph and then paused for a while. I couldn’t do anything. Since its opening, the discipline of Zhou Geng has been interrupted like this.

Finally, a small reminder that everyone's feelings about a therapeutic relationship are very subjective. All discomfort can be discussed. Remember, you always have the right to choose. Those who violate professional ethics run away with your money. Worth giving to someone who can give you professional assistance

Regarding how to prevent stepping on thunder, I will share again the people who use the pain of the seeker to make money, and the hell will not accept you! ! ! (Sorry, I just can't help but get angry at people like this)
