Life will be filled with one difficult decision after another if you don’t create an environment that is conducive to your perseverance
This book answers my 2 questions
  1. Why is "persistent" difficult?
  2. How can I help myself to persevere effectively?
5 ideas from this book

1. What is a habit

Habits refer to how you perform an action, not what that action is

2. Circumstances fill your life with difficult decisions

We thought:
As long as you have a strong ambition and willpower, you will succeed in persevering.

In fact:
If you don’t create an environment that is conducive to your persistence, life will be full of difficult decisions one after another, making people need to resist the same convenience and comfort again and again, and test themselves every day. When moving towards a new goal, decision-making and willpower cannot be used As a tool for continuous sacrifice, it is too exhausting and will have the opposite effect. Get rid of unwanted bad habits and cultivate good habits that are consistent with the goals. When the automatic response is what we expect, the habits and goals can be coordinated with each other. There is no need to rely on will.

3. Create the environment (repetition, reward, situation)

Habits are not actions that require intention and thought, and doing something repeatedly reorganizes brain activity.

  • Purpose and reward, important to start doing something consistently, help us form beneficial habits in the first place
  • How quickly a situational cue can trigger a repetitive action is important for the habit, and if it takes time to think, there may be a change in giving up or pausing (let the situation trigger the action)
  • Eliminate confusion, make decisions, confusion creates hesitation, and hesitation is defeated and hurt

The habitual mind is constantly at work, as long as there are repetitions, rewards, situations, it learns everything

Memory, Action, Situation and Persistence → Habit

4. Knowing is one thing, doing is another

In daily life, people act according to habits, not according to ideals

Control: very laborious and has an opportunity cost

Habit: Low opportunity cost

5. Self-control is not what you think

Self-control is putting yourself in the right situation and developing the right habit .

Knowing this, self-control becomes simple,

The importance of context, in the marshmallow experiment,

Can see the marshmallow and can't see the marshmallow, the endurance time of the latter is 4 minutes longer.

1 action transformed after reading

Incorporate good habits into your life

Behavior = person + situational effect

Distance completely determines your behavior,

We don't know how much our environment and stress affect our behavior, but habit knows,

When you can't make yourself healthier, richer, or smarter, instead of blaming yourself, change your kitchen settings.

For example, put the fruit bowl in an obvious place, remove resistance, set the right drive, and good habits will naturally integrate into life.
