Weight is the quickest and easiest way to assess a person's physical condition; therefore, in my clinics (endocrinology and metabolism, weight management clinic), every patient is weighed. However, there is no way to accurately reflect a person's body composition as an indicator of weight.

Weight, including the following: bone weight, muscle weight, body fat weight, other (water, blood, body fluids, etc.). However, although two people have the same weight, their height may be different.

Therefore, we will use the body mass index (BMI) to estimate a person's physical fitness by dividing the weight (kg) by the height (meters) squared.

With the rise of health awareness, terms such as "puff people" and "sarcopenia" have been widely spread, and people have begun to pay attention to medical terms such as body fat percentage, muscle mass, and fat-free weight.

There are many instruments on the market that can measure a person's body composition, including body fat rate, muscle mass, water content and other data. Below, I will briefly introduce the InBody product.


InBody

The gold standard for measuring body composition is dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). DXA can measure bone density and muscle mass, but the disadvantages are X-ray exposure, machine cost, and space requirements. If there is doubt about X-ray exposure, we can also use bioimpedance analysis (BIA) to measure body composition.

InBody's BIA test is fast, non-invasive, and has no radiation exposure. At the same time, its test report has a high correlation coefficient of 98% with DXA; therefore, many medical institutions and fitness centers use InBody instruments. Currently in Taiwan, InBody has four models: 270, (370S), 570, 770, with prices ranging from 300,000 to 800,000. There are also slight differences between each model.


⭕️InBody 270 and above models can display skeletal muscle weight and fat mass; according to the European consensus on sarcopenia, one of the important indicators for evaluating sarcopenia is "skeletal muscle mass " . InBody 270: 4 points and 8 contacts, there are 20 and 100 frequencies.

⭕️The InBody 570 model has additional data such as intracellular water, extracellular water, edema index, body shape assessment (assess the subject's body shape by BMI and body fat rate), and body circumference. InBody 570: 4 points and 8 contacts, with frequencies of 5, 50 and 500.

⭕️InBody 770 is more comprehensive, adding the edema index and phase angle of each limb segment to help health managers understand the subject's body fluid circulation and nutritional status. InBody 770: 4 points and 8 contacts, with frequencies of 1, 5, 50, 250, 500, and 1000. (*Phase angle: parameter for nutritional assessment)


Body Composition Analysis Report


Taking InBody 270 as an example, its body composition analysis report can be divided into the following 13 indicators:



☑️Body composition analysis: includes data such as total body water weight, protein, minerals, body fat weight, body weight, etc.; each data has a corresponding recommended range.



☑️Muscle-Fat Analysis: Displays skeletal muscle mass (SMM) and body fat. Simply put, the larger the skeletal muscle mass relative to the body fat mass, the stronger the body.



☑️Obesity analysis: body mass index (BMI) is an index often referred to in clinical and academic circles; body fat rate (PBF) is the percentage of body fat relative to body weight.



☑️Part-specific muscle analysis: Display the muscle mass of the trunk and limbs, assess whether the muscles in each part of the body are well developed, and whether there is a problem of insufficient muscle mass.



☑️ Fat Analysis by Parts: Shows the amount of fat in each part of the body. The definition of % in this part is: "the amount of fat in this area as a percentage of the ideal amount of fat in this area".



☑️ Body Composition History: Track the history of body composition changes. With this chart, trends in body composition can be tracked regularly.



☑️InBody Score: This score shows an assessment of body composition, including the body's total score for muscle, fat, and water. The total score is 100 points, but those who are physically strong may score more than 100 points.



☑️ Weight Control: This item includes target weight, weight control, fat control, and muscle control. "+" means increase, and "one" means decrease.



☑️Obesity assessment: According to BMI and body fat percentage (PBF), to assess the degree of obesity.



☑️Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR): As the name suggests, the waist-to-hip ratio is: "the ratio of waist circumference to hip circumference". This value is theoretically the bigger the better.



☑️Visceral fat level: The visceral fat level is mainly an indicator for evaluating the amount of fat located in the internal organs of the abdomen. This value is theoretically the bigger the better.



☑️Research data: This includes data such as fat-removed body weight, basal metabolic rate, obesity, calorie intake recommendations, and exercise calorie consumption. "Exercise calorie consumption" is mainly estimated based on 30 minutes of activity.



☑️Impedance: When the current passes through the whole body, the impedance value can be measured. According to the obtained data, the impedance data of each part can be obtained.

There are several different brands of body composition analyzers on the market, all of which can provide various data such as body weight, BMI, muscle mass, body fat percentage, etc., to assist medical, health management, and sports fitness teams to further understand the subject's physical condition and provide more information.
