Ice Douhua, Longtan Douhua to Fengyuantai Silver Douhua Memories form one Tofu pudding to another
When my grandfather was alive, the most proud deed for my eldest grandson was that when I was nine months old, my grandfather made a standing bamboo doll cart and pushed me to eat the first Fengyuantai Silver Douhua in my life. It was less than half a bowl, and the first-generation boss who was alive at the time bargained down the price to NT$50 per bowl.
My grandfather loved to tell a story about that I was standing to eat my first tofu pudding as I was only 9 months old. And grandpa was also pleased that he got a 50% discount to buy a small bowl of tofu pudding.
This story was verified by my parents and proved that I was able to stand for nine months because of my gluttony.
My parent proved the story was true and they said to give some sweet foods was the best way to push me learning to stand up when I was an infant.
At that time, Fengyuan Taiyin Douhua was composed of two-piece wooden burdens that looked very old. The owner with a shy smile set up a stall against the white stairs of the old Taiwan Bank. Or sit on the steps and eat bean curd.
That old tofu pudding street vendor was a small, wooden vender set on the stairs of Taiwanese bank Fengyuan Branch. People of my hometown called it “Taiwanese bank tofu pudding”.
Although I loved to eat bean curd since I was a child, I began to understand how to eat bean curd with ice in summer, but it started when I ate Longtan bean curd when I was in college.
I never learned how to eat icy tofu pudding until I met Longtan tofu pudding at college.
Adding ginger syrup and boiled peanuts are two warm ingredients. Tofu is no problem to eat in cold weather, but it is a little elementary to eat in summer.
Having tofu pudding with some ginger syrup and boiled peanuts in cold days is great. But if you wanna enjoy it in Summer , there're a few things you should know.
When adding ice, add less ice, because adding too much ice will numb the taste, and will dilute the aroma of soy beans. Still add the same amount of ginger syrup and boiled peanuts as in winter, so that bean curd becomes a warm cold product. In summer It tastes good.
You should add some crushed ice on your tofu pudding in Summer. And you should be careful about the amount of the ice that should be a bit less. You don't want your tongue being iced too much to taste the good flavor of soybeans. The ginger syrup and boiled peanuts are necessary for great balance of this sweet food.
Years later, I was reminded of Douhua. When I went back to find Fengyuantai Yin Douhua, the first-generation boss was no longer there. When I occasionally went to Longtan Douhua, the person who delivered the Douhua was a new face that I had never seen before.
As I recall memories of these tofu pudding, I went back to search them and both owners of these two tofu pudding was gone.
Fortunately, the bean curd with a simple soy bean fragrance is still delicious.
Fortunately, those tofu puddings are delicious as usual.
