During the sorting process, we made some interesting discoveries-

Are you still living in Taiwan through same-sex marriage? In fact, after Taiwan, there are...

2019 can be described as a very unforgettable year. Taiwan passed the same-sex marriage on May 17 and became the first in Asia, causing a global sensation. Although the epidemic began to break out all over the world in the next two years, and governments of various countries focused on epidemic prevention, it did not prevent the adoption of same-sex marriage in Ecuador, Northern Ireland in the United Kingdom, Costa Rica and Switzerland. It seems that for some countries, epidemic prevention is not an excuse to hinder the development of human rights.

The Alliance of Partners celebrated the historic moment in the passage of same-sex marriage by holding a grand "same wedding banquet" on Ketagalan Boulevard in the second week after the adoption of same-sex marriage.

Taiwan is No. 1 in Asia, what other continent?

Who doesn't want to be number one in the world? On the issue of same-sex marriage, the Netherlands (2001) is the first in Europe; Canada (2005) in North America; South Africa (2006) in Africa is the first or only; Argentina (2010) in South America; New Zealand (2013) won the first place in Oceania; finally Taiwan (2019) became the first and only one in Asia. It seems that it still owes Antarctica for the time being? (Editor's note: Well, Antarctica is stateless.)

South Africa is the first and only country in Africa to adopt same-sex marriage

Among the 30 countries and major regions that have adopted same-sex marriage, more than half are European countries, which is the continent with the most countries. It is followed by South America (five countries), North America (four countries), Oceania (two countries), and Africa and Asia at the bottom of the list. Although Europe appears to be the most open, only 34% of European countries have adopted same-sex marriage, compared with 41% in South America.

The year in which the most countries passed same-sex marriage was…

According to the author's DSE math level 2 statistics, in the past 20 years, an average of 1.5 countries have passed same-sex marriage every year, and some countries have not passed the same marriage in some years (2002, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2018). What years are the most popular for same-sex marriage?

It turns out that in 2013, 2015, and 2017, four countries passed same-sex marriages (see the chart). In recent years, many celebrities in Hong Kong have come out of the closet. The three well-known sex/gender niche films "The Name Calls You" also aroused a lot of echoes when they were released in Hong Kong. Perhaps in the context of globalization, national-level marriage equality processes will also have a positive impact on other regions.

Only a few countries vote on gay marriage

Most people who yearn for democracy believe that the people have the right to express their opinions on different issues through referendums. However, among the original 30 countries/major regions that adopted same-sex marriage, only Ireland (2015), Taiwan (2019) and Switzerland (2021) adopted a referendum to decide the right to gay marriage. In fact, there has been a lot of controversy and concern over the use of referendums to determine gay marriage rights. For example, will it oversimplify the issue? Should the majority decide the minority's human rights? Insufficient ability of voters to process information, etc., referendum may not be the most perfect democratic solution.

Then, in what way did the 27 countries that did not pass the referendum on same-sex marriage? More commonly, it is proposed by the government or MPs to be voted on by the parliament, and after a court decision, the government recommends amendments; in addition, there are countries because the government has been delaying to automatically pass same-sex marriage (eg: Northern Ireland and Austria) .

Ireland passed a referendum on same-sex marriage on May 22, 2015

In recent years, more and more people in Hong Kong support marriage equality. The results of a study released in early 2020 by the Communication and Public Opinion Research Center of the School of Journalism and Communication of the Chinese University of Hong Kong showed that only less than 30% of the respondents opposed the right of same-sex couples to marry. Although the government still turns a blind eye to public opinion, successful examples from various places also show us that fighting for marriage equality has always been a long road. In the process of winning, referring to the affirmative process and strategies of other regions, it will be helpful to promote local issues. We sincerely invite readers to peruse our detailed compilation ( see the database for details ) to discover more possibilities to promote marriage equality.
