【Healing with Food】: Connecting "Hometown Taste" from Food

I don't particularly like any kind of food, but in a foreign country. The taste of Taiwan is indeed a kind of "hometown taste" that we will always look for unconsciously. Even when we talk about this topic with foreigners, we all go to Asian stores that sell ingredients from our hometown. Full of "compatriots".

Thanks to Katie Smith for sharing their work on Unsplash.

At that time, the people in our dormitory also bought a bunch of materials, and a dozen people crowded in the kitchen to study how to make Taiwanese-style "bubble milk tea". As a result, a person came up and said, "I used to work in a beverage store, you step aside, I'll cook the pearls!" At this time, this person seemed to have the radiance of Buddha behind him, which was so touching that the scream shook the whole world. dormitory.

I just thought it was weird at the time, why is the back of a man who can cook pearls so handsome? !

And people who have worked in a beverage shop can cook things that are much different from those of us newbies (laughs). But foreign friends don't accept it, they don't like the chewiness of this "black and black round weird thing". To them, pearls are like a product of another world. However, as soon as we drink the bubble tea, we don't know why, but there is a kind of "moving" and "warm feeling" that seems to be temporarily connected with Taiwan.

This is the feeling of "hometown taste"...

After drinking, I feel more energetic and face the challenges of foreign language every day, as well as various pressures at work. This is the magic of bubble tea, right? In addition, I must buy a jar of sand tea sauce at that time and put a little bit in every meal. I feel like I'm back at the night market. The salty and sweet taste with white rice is very moving.

In the beginning, eating anything in a foreign country is very fresh, but in the end, I still feel that Taiwanese food is the most heart-warming. After all, it's the "taste" that you have been exposed to since childhood, right? I also think of my mother, when she talked about the noodles her own mother cooked, a 60-year-old man was very sigh.

Because I can't eat it anymore, but the "memory of the taste" is still deeply rooted in my heart

We can buy a bunch of raw materials, use perfect kitchen facilities, and study hard to restore the flavor of the time, but it is still impossible to achieve 100%. Because the heat, seasoning habits, cooking methods, and "emotions" of the parties are all different.

At this time, I thought of a very interesting thing. If the chef is in a good mood, he takes care of every dish, and the food he cooks is super invincible and delicious, then the business is so good that it explodes. As a result, the chef was replaced, and All the techniques were handed over to the heir, but I don't know why, the same facilities, techniques, recipes, and materials, but the cooking is not as good as the original chef.

Emotions and emotions are transmitted to food or other media

Therefore, some masters see that their disciple is in a bad mood that day, and they will ask him to do some chores. After expressing those things and rectifying his mood, he can only touch tools and do things. Whether it is a chef, a writer, a painter, or a sculptor... it feels like the same concept, which is very interesting.

So my favorites are actually small restaurants and buffets near the school. Some of those aunts and uncles don’t really want to do it, but in order to provide cheap, nutritious and delicious meals for the developing students, plus retirement When I have nothing to do, I am bored to grow vegetables and fruits, and then open a store to kill time and provide students with more choices. I can feel their "love" and "care" for "student children" from the food, so That bento dish was really "delicious". I also sincerely thank these people for their efforts to save us from the abuse of some "bad shops" that should not be placed in random places.

Every time I go back to Taiwan, I do eat all the familiar bento shops and buffets once. Feel the full "human touch" and "hometown flavor".

Thank you so much to those who have given so much.

Off topic:

I once thought that if I wanted to open a small shop to pass the time in the future... I might want to open a beverage store, named "Crazy Inventor Beverage Store", and only sell products developed by myself that are nutritious, healthy and scary looking. To scare everyone (laughs).
