[Stay at home and cook a pot] Five sets of European and American sex/non-niche TV dramas that are expected in the second half of the year

Although the epidemic has eased slightly compared with a few months ago, so far, people returning from other places still need to undergo quarantine. Traveling abroad is too troublesome, the weather is sultry, and it is impossible to hike the mountains every day. Everyone needs some entertainment without going out. Of course, watching dramas is the first choice. On the other hand, we are also happy to see that the gender/gender niche is no longer hidden in popular culture. For example, the British drama "Heartstopper" featuring a gay boy has recently become a hit, and Netflix has confirmed that it will launch The second and third seasons, and in recent years, there are countless BL dramas in Japan, Korea, and Thailand.

If you don’t want to go out of your way and only watch Asian BL dramas, let’s see which five European and American TV dramas with the theme of sex/gender niche in the second half of this year are worth recommending.

Hug My First Love (Love, Victor, Season 3 available on Disney+)

This drama is the sequel to the 2018 movie Love, Simon. The movie version is an American campus light comedy, the difference is that the protagonist of the story is a gay man. The TV version is the same, but the protagonist is changed from white to Latino, so that the minority of the minority have the opportunity to appear on the screen. The protagonist Victor is played by Michael Cimino. He once said that he is heterosexual, but he is unwilling to limit himself, because he does not want to suddenly come out ten years later. Actor Ana Ortiz, who played Betty's sister in "Ugly Betty", will also be expected to play the protagonist's mother. The protagonist of the movie version, Simon, is mostly narrated in this play, and Josh Duhamel, the sportsman who plays Simon's father, also makes a cameo appearance in the second season. In the third season of the series, the audience accompanies the protagonist through the joys and sorrows, watching him grow up, can he heal his emotional wounds? This is left for you to discover for yourself.

The Crown Prince's Choice (Young Royals, Season 2 coming to Netflix in November)

Royal dramas are no longer a British franchise, and campus romances are no longer exclusive to the United States. This one comes from Sweden and tells the love story of a Swedish prince and a male classmate. The background of the series is an aristocratic boarding school and a traditional royal family, which forms a strong contradiction with gay issues, and the prince and his boyfriend from the grass-roots class also contrast with each other. The prince is trying to fight for his freedom amid many constraints in his life, and at the same time he knows that he is the first heir to the throne. How will he choose in the face of this dilemma? Playing her boyfriend is Venezuelan actor Omar Rudberg, who also plays a niche in the drama, and he himself is reluctant to label himself, saying that he likes people regardless of gender, and there have been women and men. companion. By the way, if you want to know what the real-life royal family thinks about homosexuality, you might as well check out an old report on G-spot TV.

Heartbreak High (Netflix TBD)

This Australian production is also a school drama, derived from the series of the same name that aired from 1994 to 1999. The old version tells the story of a fictional Sydney high school student and staff from multiple cultural groups. The background of the 2022 version is the same high school, the students are still ethnically diverse, and there are also marginalized youth. The difference is that gender/gender niche roles have been added: some are non-binary, some are bisexual, and some are gay . Two of the leads are played by James Majoos and Gemma Chua-Tran, both of whom are out non-binary themselves. On the other hand, Netflix is very considerate this time. When it announced the cast list in November last year, it listed the pronouns chosen by each actor to show respect, and the practice deserves everyone's support.

First Kill (available on Netflix)

Vampire tales seem to be equated with romance, and this set of "A Hunt for Love" is no exception. Adapted from the short story of the same name by author VE Schwab, the play is also based on the campus, and the play is full of conflict. The two heroines are a white vampire and a black vampire hunter. The former must kill before officially joining the powerful vampire family. The first prey she sees is the latter; the latter, however, comes from the vampire hunter family and must kill the vampires to prove her ability to the family. The two gradually got closer and couldn't help but fall in love with each other. How will they deal with love and family? Worth watching.

Queer as Folk (available on Peacock in the US)

If you, like the author, are born in the 80s and watch British and American dramas from time to time, you should have heard the title of "Queer as Folk". The Yuanzu version, which premiered in the UK in 1999, tells the daily lives of five gay men, including workplaces, nightclubs, and homes. The remake version, which premiered in the United States in 2000, moved the stage to Pittsburgh, the United States. The background of the five protagonists is roughly the same as that of the British version, and the content involves issues such as gay marriage, surrogacy, adoption of children, and sexual orientation discrimination. This year, the TV station will remake the theme again, and the background of the story has moved to New Orleans in the southern United States. The cast includes out non-binary Fin Argus and Jesse James Keitel, gay actor Ryan O'Connell, who suffers from mild cerebral palsy, and deaf model Nyle DiMarco, who is sexually fluid. However, I am most intrigued by Kim Cattrall, who plays Samantha, my favorite character in Sex and the City, and see what happens to her since her split with Carrie.
