If you pay attention to The World Barista Championship (WBC) in 2021, you will find that the WBC champion, runner-up and third runner-up all choose a coffee bean called "Eugenioides". What is it? Why did it explode overnight? Today, I will introduce the new favorite Eugenioides in the coffee industry!

Non-arabica species Eugenioides

According to the data, Eugenioides (translation: Eugenioides / Clove coffee) is a rare coffee species, not a coffee variety, and even it is the mother species of Arabica (Eugenioides + Robusta => Arabica)

species? Variety? I can't tell the difference. It's very complicated! ! ! Therefore, the following chart has been compiled for you.

There are many types of noodles, doll noodles, ramen noodles, spaghetti, thick noodles, rice noodles... The doll noodles are divided into the former one, Fu literal, Xin ramen... The coffee is similar!

There are many species in coffee (usually starting with Coffea), the most familiar ones are Arabica and Robusta, and in Arabica there are Geisha, Typica, SL28 that we know... and this year's explosion In red is the species Eugenioides.

This year's popularity is Arabica's mother --- Eugenioides Clove Coffee

Eugenioides Clove Coffee (probably pronounced: U-gun-noise-E-desk)

Origin: East Africa (Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya and Congo, etc.)

Flavor Profile: Incredibly sweet with almost zero acidity. For example: milk cereal, papaya, bubble gum, cake batter, sticky rice, strawberry yogurt, confectioners’ sugar, toasted marshmallows, guava, lemon juice…

Caffeine content: ★☆☆☆☆
Planting difficulty: ★★★★☆
Plant size: ★★★☆☆
Plant yield: ★☆☆☆☆
Coffee size: ★☆☆☆☆

Above is Eugenioides, below is Geisha. Since then it can be seen that Eugenioides are really fine grained!

It is a rare coffee species rescued from a genetics lab. Perhaps because of the low natural caffeine content, which makes it susceptible to pests and diseases, and the very low yields, only 150 grams of coffee per tree are grown in very few places. Farms currently growing include: Finca Inmaculada, Finca Monserrat, Finca Las Nubes in western Colombia.

Comments on Eugenioides

"It's an amazing coffee that I've never tasted." --- Diego Campos
"In one cup, I found a coffee that tasted different, it had an incredible sweetness. But in the next cup, it turned out to be salty and vegetable. But I clearly tasted its sweetness and acidity, so I was eager to know it more deeply." --- Hugh Kelly

Although Eugenioides has a variety of flavors and has unlimited potential, it has always been difficult to grow. Even if it is planted in large quantities now, I believe it will take three to five years before it becomes a popular choice.

As Australia's Hugh Kelly mentioned, "Maybe it's time to unleash the potential of these 124 coffee families!" Thousands of varieties that are just as delicious. So if we dig deeper into each coffee species, will we find tastier, more climate-resilient coffees? This is definitely exciting news!
