【Translation】Izumi Kyoka vs Tanizaki Junichiro's Hot Pot Battle Part II

(edited)
The last time I talked about Izumi Kyoka's cleanliness (please refer to the link), this time I finally got the original text and translated it well. The second hot pot battle between the two, this time Akutagawa Ryunosuke and Satomi was also present. feast. (✽ ゚д゚✽)

It's another time for the various revelations of the unworthy younger generation Tanizaki Junichiro~ This article is included in the third paragraph of "The Past in the Literary World" in "The Essays of Tanizaki Junichiro". The following is the translation of the first paragraph and the third paragraph of the article.

The second paragraph is a bit off topic to talk about the two great actors of Kabuki during the Meiji period, Ogami Kikugoro and Ichikawa Danjuro, both called Danju, who died in the same year as Momiji, and his impression of Natsume Soseki (wearing high-end clothes) The kimono made of Oshima Tsumugi, take a rickshaw to the front of Aoki-do, and buy a tobacco roll that is very luxurious for the salary of a university professor (www), so I skip it.

If you want to reprint, please indicate the source, thank you.

[If you follow the original text, it may be very hard to read, so I cut it into small sections to facilitate the readers to chew]

In the past, the old man Tokuda Qiusheng once said to me, "If Momiba Shanren (Ozaki Momiji) was still alive, you should be very fond of Momiji!". Momiji passed away in Meiji 36, when I was only eighteen years old. And I started writing in Meiji 43, the seventh year after that. If Hongye has not passed away, I am afraid I will knock on Hongye's door, and it is not necessarily his disciple once.

But whether I can really be loved by the red leaves as Qiu Sheng said, I am dubious. Momiji, like me, is a child of Shimomachi in Tokyo, so it should be possible to talk to each other, but because they both have weaknesses and flaws that are shared by Edo people, they will definitely be mercilessly seen through their minds, and then they will be painfully painful. Curse it.

And unlike Momiji, I wasn't always the one who lived as a son of Edo. On the one hand, I am the son of Edo, and on the other hand, there are many anti-Edo places. Maybe I will make Momiji unhappy and be kicked out of the house, or I will escape myself.

The old man Qiusheng said: "Actually, I respect Koda Rohan more than the red leaves, but because I was very afraid of Rohan, I entered the door of the red leaves." A little spring mirror flower is completely different from the autumn sound. That person worshipped red leaves from the bottom of his heart. After Momiji died, every morning after washing her face, she would kneel before her teacher's photo before breakfast. In other words, the prototype of the teacher of Masacho who appeared in the "Gynecology Chart" is Ozaki Momiji.

It is said that Qiusheng once said, "Hongye or something, is not such a great writer." As a result, Kyoka, who was sitting there, was furious and rushed over to beat him. I heard this story from Morihiko Yamamoto, the president of the renovation agency who happened to be at the scene. However, what I think is: it turns out that, if it is Jinghua, this kind of thing is really not unexpected. If I were under the red leaf gate, 80% of them would also be beaten by the mirror flower, right?
(Translation: You also know that you will be beaten if you are stupid? w)

There is a considerable age gap between Jinghua and me (translation: 16 years difference), and a writer with an old-time atmosphere like him probably will not have a second one. In the Meiji period, when it comes to "Red Dew", it is the opposition between the two writers, Momiji and Rohan. Kyoka, who is quite loyal to her master, also seems to have a subtle hostility towards Rohan because of this relationship. One time, I accidentally mentioned Rohan, and although I didn't remember the exact words, Kyoka accidentally said something like "the man who beat the hero". At the time, I thought: So Jinghua is so partial to Master.
There is a chicken restaurant that Kyoka likes very much on the banks of the One River in Kyobashi. Kyoka, Satomi (1), and Akutagawa Ryunosuke used to eat chicken hot pot with four people there.

I have a strong appetite and eat very fast. I usually have a bad habit when eating around hot pot. I can't wait for it to be fully cooked, so I eat a little from the side. On the other hand, Kyoka, who is very concerned about hygiene, is the opposite of me. If something is not fully cooked, I will never stretch my chopsticks to pick it up. So, when I eat hot pot with Jinghua, I will eat it all, but Jinghua can't catch the gap to eat at all.
(Translation: die of laughter! Tanizaki is really the No. 1 bad friend who must not be invited to eat together!)

Therefore, I have eaten this kind of loss from time to time, and I have experienced Jinghua, and I will be warned beforehand: "Hey, listen to me! This is what I want to eat, so I want to do this." Then in the hot pot Put a divider. However, once I started chatting, I accidentally forgot and crossed the line and leveled it. "Ah! You, that is!" By the time Kyoka found out, it was too late. At this time, Jinghua will show a speechless, troubled and embarrassed expression. But there were also times when I didn't finish it, and his face had an indescribably weird expression, so I sometimes deliberately ate it all in a mischievous mood.
(Translation: There is a wonderful sense of responsibility that the elders are responsible for cleaning up the meal when they treat guests.)

It also happened in this chicken restaurant: Ryunosuke Akutagawa noticed that Kyoka was sitting cross-legged with tucked knees (2). I couldn't help but say, "Is there no such thing as the son of Edo (3) who tucks his knees and crossed his legs?" Everyone knows that Kyoka is from Kanazawa, but usually he likes to show the appearance of a son of Edo. I have no objection with Akutagawa about Kyoka being a great writer, but I have no objection with Akutagawa about Kyoka being a person far from the son of Edo.

(1) Annotation: Reading Don, the Chinese Wiki mispronounced it as "diao", but it is actually a Chinese pronunciation, not a Japanese character pronunciation.

(2) Annotation: The original text reads "Hugging き Hu sitting", Hu sitting means cross-legged, and cuddling means hugging. Adding the two together, in fact, even the Japanese themselves are not quite sure . Some people say that they may be sitting with their hands on their knees, and some people say that they may be standing on one knee and hugging, and the other leg is crossed.

(3) Annotation: Son of Edo (えどっこ, Edo っ児), originally refers to the residents who grew up in Edo during the Tokugawa period. Later, it was used to refer to a certain style of behavior, such as: vain, informal, bragging, affectionate, loner, shallow lifestyle (not saving, drinking now and now drunk, etc.), stubborn and easy to quarrel and many more.

Well, it really doesn't look like a mirror flower, hahaha.

According to the description of Moro Miya's "Edo Japan", the people who gathered in Edo Castle at that time were usually single foreigners, thus forming a lifestyle that looks very modern and urban, both bold and hedonistic. For example, often Moving, renting a house instead of buying a house, eating out often, etc. In fact, this part can also be seen to be similar to the concept of "son of Edo". Although it is not a book devoted to the son of Edo, it is worth recommending for a glimpse of the style of the Edo period.

Regarding the matter of Izumi Jinghua beating Tokutian Qiusheng, the Japanese Wiki wrote:

In order to publish "円本" (えんぽん) (えんぽん), the president of the renovation company ( the publishing industry was depressed after the Great Kanto Earthquake, the renovation company almost went bankrupt, the president made a big bet and launched the "Complete Works of Modern Japanese Literature" by reservation system, a total of 63 volumes, a month I sent a copy, a copy of which costs 1 yuan, so it is called a yen book ) to visit Qiusheng, and just said, "Wait, I'm going to Jinghua." As a result, Qiusheng joked: "Because Jinghua eats too much. He had a lot of fruit, his stomach was broken and he died." That's why Kyoka was furious.

However, some people say that it was because Qiu Sheng made this joke at Hongye's funeral that he was beaten. But these statements are different from Tanizaki Junichiro's statement, and it may take time to find out what the whole incident is.

But what is certain is that Quan Jinghua and Detian Qiusheng don't seem to get along very well, and this love-hate entanglement may have to be written in a separate article~ Please look forward to it. :DDD
