Matters and Web Monetization: User-Automated Payment Methods
For Internet payments, this is an era of rapid change. The legal currency control in various countries is tightened step by step, and there are many types of virtual currencies, with different good and bad. People exchange currencies frequently, and eventually the value is hosted on the exchange, making the exchange the new bank.
Is there a way for the payer and the payee to use their favorite currency to conduct transactions smoothly without relying on a centralized exchange? The Interledger Protocol implements such a function. The cross-chain protocol network consists of independent connection points , forming a decentralized cross-currency market, automatically converting different currencies at both ends of the transaction, and connecting the traditional banking system and the new blockchain ledger.
The Web Monetization web standard connects the cross-chain protocol to the Internet. For a long time, there is no common payment standard on the Internet, and the 402 HTTP status code used to indicate payment needs has always been experimental. To some extent, the rise of Stripe and the invention of Bitcoin are both filling this vacancy; and Web Monetization based on cross-chain protocol solves the problem of cross-currency and has become another standard that has become popular, and is also being proposed by W3C under review.
Therefore, Matters integrates the Web Monetization standard through Grant for the Web jointly initiated by Mozzilla, Creative Commons and Coil. With the support of Grant for the Web, users can easily use Web Monetization in Matters website or IPFS, and accept other users' requests. Donate.
Web Monetization is not widely used in the Chinese world. In order to allow more users to experience it, we also give out a sum of money to reward users who use Web Monetization in the article.
How to accept donations through Web Monetization
Both the payer and payee of Web Monetization require a service provider. The recipient's service provider will provide a payment pointer , and Matters will embed this address in the user's article to accept donations. After receiving the donation, the user can transfer from the collection service to another account as needed.
Currently, the more popular payment service providers are GateHub and Uphold , which will assign a payment address after the user registers for a free account. For example, for Uphold, you can click From in the transfer area on the far right of the panel, select Interledger in the drop-down list, and finally copy the payment address.
On the Matters wallet page , click the last "Cross-chain payment address", and a pop-up window will pop up. You just need to paste the address copied in the previous step here, click OK, and you're done!
How to Give Through Web Monetization
At present, the only popular payment service provider is Coil , which provides browser plug-ins on the desktop and customized browsers on the mobile phone. Whether through a browser plug-in or a customized mobile browser, you can log in to your Coil account and browse the web normally.
After the cross-chain payment address is configured, the article published by the user will have the payment address embedded on the Matters website and IPFS. At this point, your Coil plugin or browser will remind you that this article has been connected to Web Monetization, and you can donate directly to the author.
