Genes or environment?

Our golden-haired, blue-eyed father

Recently, I was following dramas on <Netflix> and watched several documentaries, among which "Our Father with Golden Hair and Blue Eyes" impressed me deeply. In the play, a girl with golden hair and blue eyes wonders why she is different from her parents with black hair. Later, her mother explains her background: her father is a sperm donor. Wanting to know more about her identity, she conducts a DNA test at home and discovers that she has many half-siblings, uncovering a startling conspiracy involving sperm donation and a well-known reproductive medicine physician.

According to statistics, in the United States, one out of every 5 couples suffers from infertility, perhaps because of stress or lack of sperm count, so it is common to seek help from an infertility doctor. In the 1970s and 1980s, the information on sperm donation was not developed. The bad doctor used his own semen to falsely help infertile mothers to conduct evil "seeding" experiments, resulting in nearly 100 children. This kind of evil behavior that destroys the family and destroys the three views of others has left these people with unbearable shadows for the rest of their lives.

Because the laws of the United States did not explicitly prohibit such behaviors, nor even defined the boundaries of "sexual assault", the bad doctor was not subject to any severe sanctions after his evil deeds were exposed. Severely punished, with a staggering ending.

lost sister of identical twins

After reading the evil deeds of the above-mentioned unscrupulous doctors, and comparing the headline of this ETtoday news cloud "2-year-old child was adopted to the United States! After 44 years of finding identical twins, there is a surprising difference in intelligence", I feel that the genes of golden hair and blue eyes are not as good as the importance of the environment.

It is said that there is a pair of twins in South Korea when their sister was lost in the market when they were 2 years old, and was finally adopted by an American couple. It was not until 2018 that South Korea launched the "Lost Children Project", and they found their sister far away in the United States through DNA tracing. The two successfully met and reunited in 2020.

Afterwards, the Twins Research Center in the United States compared the twins in terms of intelligence, personality and medical history, and found that they had similar physical characteristics and personalities, but there were striking differences in intelligence. The twin sisters who grew up in South Korea have higher scores on intelligence tests related to perceptual reasoning and processing speed. The overall IQ difference between the two is 16 points. Compared with the average identical twins, the gap has increased significantly within 7 points.

The researcher said, "The creation of a person is actually related to genes and environment, so it is not possible to rashly determine which is important in nature and nurture. For example, twins with special acquired environments (grown in different countries) show completely different results. ”, it is speculated that it may be related to the family environment. The younger sister who stayed in Korea is in the family of Hele, and the older sister grew up in a strict religious family.

The raw ones are put aside and the ones raised are bigger than the sky

This is a commonly used phrase in southern Taiwan. Although we often say that we need to "drink water and think of the source" to know and appreciate our ancestors, we should remind the dependents not to obscure the painstaking efforts and credits of raising them. Especially after reading the above two examples, it is better to "seek" (anger) in a short time than to nurture the water. Family education is very important.
