Enter the Grade II historic building: Yiping Mirror Factory

If you talk about the Yip Ping Mirror Factory, not many people may know about it; but if you use the name of the Grade II historical building registered: No. 170 Yi Kuk Street, more people may know or have heard of it.

The completed restoration of Yiping Mirror Factory

Speaking of Yi Ping Mirror Factory, it actually closed down about ten years ago, around 2011-2013, due to the old age of the family members and the lack of successors. It is no longer in operation. As for the history of Yiping Mirror Factory, I believe it would be better for you to ask Google experts yourself than for me to explain it, so I will jump directly to the development in recent years. After the completion of the business, the Yi Ping Mirror Factory was rented out on three floors. The ground floor was rented to a nearby restaurant for use as an additional restaurant area, while the first and second floors were divided into two families. It was not until about late 2020 that the major owner decided to take back the unit for renovation for revitalization and restoration projects. The overall project was roughly completed at the end of November 2021. It is worth mentioning that the entire project was considered to apply to the government for a revitalization subsidy plan. However, due to its age, both parties lacked the original architectural design drawings, so the government required that the arcade be retracted to the entrance in order to qualify. , but the major owner said that they have always extended the arcade, and the words "Yiping Aluminum Photo Frame" on the exterior wall have always been in this position. If it were retracted, it would have no special style and commemorative value, so they decided to finance the entire project themselves. All project costs will not receive any funding from the government.

After talking about the current situation, why not go inside and take a look at the restored interior together.

The first and second floors still maintain green and white floor tiles
After the restoration was completed on the first floor, the attic was still left; in addition, the one on the upper left is a pedal-operated clothes trolley
Stairs leading to the rooftop, nearly vertical slope

As I said above, why is it only said to be roughly completed instead of officially completed? Because the entire repair process can be considered a twists and turns. According to the owner's oral statement, it was discovered at the beginning of the project that the ceiling of the stairs leading to the rooftop on the second floor contained asbestos, and it was necessary to apply to the government for demolition. The money was less, and the complicated procedures were the most annoying part. While waiting for approval for demolition, something unexpected happened. There was a black rain and heavy rain for several consecutive days. Not only were there water stains in the indoor areas, but there were also water leakage problems, especially on the second floor. Flooding occurred, but because it was always raining, it was difficult to carry out waterproofing repair works. Even after the waterproofing project was successfully carried out later, the problem of water leakage was once again faced, but this time it was not due to the weather, but to the buildings on both sides. The buildings on both sides are mainly subdivided houses. The water pipes in them are complicated and there are many leaks. Some of the pipes seem to have burst, which has caused yellow water stains to appear on the white walls that have been oiled.

Wrong windows installed on the second floor
Although we can't go back to the old days, it's the closest restoration.

Water damage from unknown source

During the entire restoration process, we can actually see that the owner focused more on the exterior than the interior. What will the explanation be? In fact, if you have the opportunity to compare it with the previous one, you can see that even though the entire factory has been out of operation for more than ten years, in this renovation plan, the owner still requested to repaint the words on the exterior wall again. , instead of covering it up with paint and then disappearing from everyone's eyes, the owners also require that all windows have a similar design that meets today's specifications. This is also because all windows have been replaced with hard windows. , or the color/size does not meet the requirements and has to be reinstalled many times. This shows that the owner is really thoughtful when restoring the entire building, hoping to restore the original condition brick by brick. Although it is regrettable that even if the entire restoration project is completed, we will no longer be able to see the glory days of the mirror factory again, and all the tools and instruments related to the mirror factory have been transferred, but we can still use the only remaining achievements to The appearance recalls the heyday of those days.

After talking about the current situation, we have to talk about future development. The owner hopes to rent some specialty businesses, such as coffee shops, cultural youth industries, workshops, etc., so that the entire building can have a new look for everyone to visit. Unfortunately, as of today, we still haven't found a suitable tenant, so we may have to wait for one more row to arrive before letting everyone visit again, and the owner hopes to let more people visit instead of renting it out again for people to live in. In addition, although the mirror factory has long since closed down, because it has a long history, there are still many landscape and landscape paintings waiting to be collected by interested parties, and the owners do not want to recycle those works as waste paper, so if you are interested in these two items, If you are interested, please contact me and I can find the owner on your behalf. (Declaration of interests: The owner’s grandson and I were classmates when we were in college. Fortunately, we still kept in touch after college, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to take everyone to visit this Grade II historical building with photos)

Finally, I want to help promote myself xD If you are really interested in this degree or want to know more (aka save some works), please leave a message and ask me @@ Finally, I hope everyone can donate generously to take pictures below Five steps, support my driving force to continue creating, thank you

Oh, I don't remember what I said. In the second photo of "Yiping Mirror Factory that has completed the restoration project", you can vaguely notice that there are angle irons at each of the four underground corners facing the road. This is not used to support the entire building or the construction workers forgot to take it away, but it was installed by the owner to prevent large vehicles from hitting the stone pillars due to tail swing when driving away. According to her, no matter before, during the bamboo shed restoration process, or now after the restoration is completed, large trucks still often knock down the stone pillars, so she hopes that angle irons can be used to protect the corners of the stone pillars.
