Channels through which ordinary people can donate to support Ukrainian civil society

Russia started a full-scale invasion of Ukraine today. Under the disparity of military strength, Ukraine has been conducting combat training for ordinary citizens of all walks of life for many years. The president tweeted today that he would give arms to anyone who wants to defend their country.

It is also a civil society war against power. Outside of conflict, I think donations are probably the most effective form of support we can offer. So here is a list of reliable NGOs and charities compiled by local Ukrainian media. Due to the surge in traffic these days, some pages may take a few more tries to open...

war related

  • Save Life : This NGO uses crowdfunding to provide non-lethal military equipment (such as night vision goggles) to the front lines. They also train Ukrainian soldiers, study the needs of service members, and help veterans reintegrate into society.
  • Donbas SOS : This agency provides assistance to residents of the Donbas war zone, refugees displaced by the conflict to other parts of Ukraine, and released prisoners of war. Services include legal, accommodation, psychological support and more.
  • Crimea SOS : This agency has been assisting refugees from Crimea since Russia invaded Crimea in 2014. They also documented the oppression of the Crimean population by the Russian authorities and advocated an end to the Russian occupation.
  • Hospitallers : (Click the bank transfer information below each post) This is a medical team composed of volunteers. First responders and doctors are ordinary people who have undergone intensive training and go to the front line to rescue wounded soldiers. They rely on crowdfunding to cover the cost of maintaining vehicles, fuel and medical equipment.

investigative journalism

  • Slidstvo : An independent news organization founded in 2012 that has produced documentaries exposing corruption. They have investigated prison mismanagement, fraud, money laundering, and the assassination of journalist Sheremet.
  • UKRPravda News : Founded in 2000 by the famous journalist Gongadze who was murdered the same year. It is Ukraine's most influential news organization, often publishing exclusive political stories and exposing officials' abuse of power.
  • Zaborona Media : Independent media also founded by journalists. They have investigated abuses of Ukrainian workers in the Middle East and corruption in the construction industry.

Epidemic related

  • Svoyi : Svoyi supports people who are infected with COVID but cannot be admitted to hospital due to personal reasons, or because the hospital is full, and patients who have to be discharged early because the hospital is prioritizing the care of critically ill patients.
  • Monsters, Inc. : This Odesa-based agency provides emergency medical assistance to local residents and also helps local hospitals obtain COVID-related medicines and medical equipment.

  • Tabletochki : Supporting children with cancer for 10 years. They help arrange medicines, medical equipment, opportunities for overseas treatment, and more.
  • ChildrenWeWillMakeIt : Originally created to raise funds for a young boy with spinal muscular atrophy, it now supports other children with the condition.
  • Ruka ob Ruku : This is a running group for children with disabilities, which provides opportunities for children to train and compete.

Senior citizens

  • Happy Old : This charity provides groceries, medicines, entertainment, education and sports to seniors across Ukraine, and helps find employment.
  • Let's Help : This organization cares for the elderly living alone, and also advocates for the state to improve the treatment of the elderly (such as providing more convenient educational opportunities for the elderly over 60).
  • Starenki : Focus on the problems faced by the elderly, such as providing daily necessities for the elderly living alone.

female

  • Women Perspectives : This agency helps women who experience domestic violence, workplace discrimination, etc., and works with local and national governments to implement gender equality policies.
  • Marsh Zhinok (Women's March) : Every March 8th, this organization holds a rally to advocate for gender equality and end violence against women.

wanderer

  • Help the homeless : Support the homeless and the elderly in need by providing them with free food, medicine, personal hygiene and clothing. Since it was founded by a group of volunteers in 2016, they have been running on crowdfunding.
  • Suka Zhizn : An Instagram account started in 2017 that tells the stories of homeless people. Currently providing employment, identity documents, finding relatives, legal aid and other services.

donate blood

  • Blood Agents : is an NGO that advocates regular, informed, and unpaid blood, and has encouraged more than 5,000 people to donate blood over the past six years.
  • Donor UA : A system for automatically recruiting and managing blood donors, designed to encourage blood donation.

animal rights

  • Sirius : Ukraine's largest stray animal shelter, founded in 2000, can accommodate more than 3000 animals. The agency relies on crowdfunding to buy food, medicine, build new housing, and more.
  • Happy Paw : A charity dedicated to the problem of stray animals. They help owners find lost pets, sterilize domestic animals, and teach children in schools to treat animals humanely.
  • UAnimals : Movement to protect animals from exploitation and abuse. Organisers have successfully won a ban on animal performances in circuses and persuaded many of the designers at Ukrainian Fashion Week to stop using animal furs.
