【Don't let your major be your sunk cost】

Think about how to apply the thinking and knowledge gained in this field to other places. Don't look at the "price" of short-term salary, continue to explore your interests, and you will be able to create greater "value".
Don't let your major be your sunk cost, this is a recent realization.

After four years of studying in the Department of Chemical Engineering, he continued to study in the Institute of Chemical Engineering for two years. While the field of study has become more specialized, the sunk costs have also increased.

What are "sunk costs"? You might think of it this way:

When you want to choose a job after graduation, if you want to choose "other industries that you are interested in but not chemical industry":

I might have to give up my good-paying TSMC engineer position (must have a master's degree in chemical engineering), or I might have to put down six years of chemical expertise and start over in a new place.

It's going to be a tough decision, like stepping out of your comfort zone. Sometimes staying in your comfort zone for so long can make it painful to even take a small step.

But if you dare not choose when you have the opportunity to try again, the sunk cost will increase with time and professionalism, and it may be too late to make a choice when you want to regret it.

After reading many books and many talks, "keeping an open mind" may be a good solution to this problem.

Don't think of switching runways as a need to give up your original major.

Jobs' Wiring Theory goes like this:

If I hadn't dropped out of school and sat in on an art calligraphy course that I was interested in, but didn't seem to be that useful, then the Macintosh would not have had multiple fonts or properly separated fonts, such magical typography.

Cross-field to seemingly unrelated places, but in fact, the thinking structure and logic learned in the original major may become the nutrients of the new field, and even only you can think like this.

Especially in the current era when online courses and distance teaching are so developed, we have more opportunities to learn across fields in a low-cost and efficient way, and slashes create more value.

【in conclusion】

In an era of technological innovation and rapid industrial iteration, it has become increasingly difficult to have a job that can directly lead to retirement.

Only a professional expert has a higher chance of being replaced by machines and AI.

Don’t let your major be a sunk cost, but think about how you can take the thinking and knowledge you learn in this field and apply it elsewhere.

Don't look at the "price" of short-term salary, continue to explore your interests, and you will be able to create greater "value".
