從1990年代初開始，對五四新文化運動的評價，在知識界和思想界發生了一些戲劇性的爭論，呈現共識的碎裂。在種種紛爭話題中，最缺乏共識、最具挑戰性的一個話題或許就是：五四新文化運動與文革有「淵源關係」嗎？前者應該為後者負責嗎？在什麼意義上可以肯定或否定這種關係？抑或這種所謂的「關係」完全是一個偽問題？
