The Rossi & Rossi Gallery in Sheung Wan is exhibiting "From The Mountains," which includes the late Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami’s photographic artworks, titled Snow(2002). It captures Iran’s wintry landscape, and these tranquil and therapeutic images somehow make people escape the hustle and bustle of city life.
Abbas is one of the greatest filmmakers of the Iranian New Wave. He is good at allegorical storytelling through his unadorned lens. In 1997, his film "Taste of Cherry" was awarded the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. However, his career was not always smooth sailing. Back in 1979, the film industry becomes stagnant after the Iranian Revolution. Abbas fled the city to the countryside in winter. He bought a camera and started taking pictures.
Abbas loves nature, photographing trees, crows, rain, and snow. He was attracted to snow by its uniquely untouched environment. He said, “the good thing about the snow is that it will hide the bad things of nature, and everything will look pristine and nice under the snow.” He likes to take pictures when the snow had just stopped, and the snow land looks flawless.
Abbas tried to explore people’s true nature in his movie, yet his photography has no trace of human beings, only the shadows left by trees in the winter sun. The black and white landscape looks like an ink wash painting.
