文明终结前夜的party上发生了什么
昨天,美国东北部遭遇了“炸弹气旋”的袭击,狂风大雪让出行变得极为不便。晚上走进费城交响乐团的演出大厅时,眼前的景象令人吃了一惊:平日里至少要坐下近2000名观众的大厅,只稀稀拉拉地填满了大概五分之一的座位。后来在报纸上读到数字说,到现场的观众只有420人。
即便不是极端天气造成的这番景象,昨晚的这场演出也是非常特别的。作曲家、指挥家Michael Tilson Thomas选择了两部作品。下半场是柴可夫斯基的最后一部交响曲《悲怆(第六交响曲)》——这部作品的首演是在柴可夫斯基去世前9天。它的结构不同寻常,第三乐章的结束极为激昂,就像很多其他作品的结尾一样,几乎到了让人不由自主想鼓掌的地步,而真正结束的第四乐章则晦暗凄凉。
但这种特殊,和上半场的作品比起来都不算什么。那是指挥家自己从42年前开始创作,但直到前年才第一次演出的作品:Four Preludes to Playthings of the Wind。
这部作品融合了交响乐和酒吧乐队,还有三位女高音演唱,这也是我第一次在费交的演出中见到如此混搭的风格。而歌词则是美国诗人卡尔·桑德堡(Carl Sandburg)的作品,诗作的标题也就是这部音乐作品的名字。
作曲家说,这部作品写的是“文明终结前夜的party上究竟发生了什么”(“what actually happens at the party the night before civilization ends”)。桑德堡是在一战后、二战前写下这首诗的,他看到了文明的自负和脆弱。而作曲家则是在越战之后开始创作的,那时的他选择桑德堡的这首诗,也一定是看到了人类社会重复出现的主题。
而现在,经过了几十年的和平繁荣之后,这一主题又再次如幽灵一样开始显现。无论是在美国,还是在中国,以及世界很多其他地方。尤其是诗作中的这一段,显得尤为应景:
It has happened before. / Strong men put up a city and got / a nation together, / And paid singers to sing and women / to warble: We are the greatest city, / the greatest nation, / nothing like us ever was.
于是,在这个暴风雪袭击、观众零零落落的夜晚,在柴可夫斯基那如葬礼般结束的《悲怆交响曲》之前,我感受到一百年前、四十年前以及当下的历史在小提琴、电子乐和女高音的声音中交织。
今天醒来之后,脑中依然回响着诗句里写的强人、歌手、雪松木、老鼠、蜥蜴。于是试着翻译了一下这首诗,和大家分享。

1.
The woman named Tomorrow
一个名叫“明天”的女人
sits with a hairpin in her teeth

and fastens at last the last braid and coil
直到系紧最后一根辫子
and puts the hairpin where it belongs
然后把发夹放回原位

The doors were cedar
门是雪松木的
and the panels strips of gold
镶着一条条的金饰
and the girls were golden girls
女孩们是金色的女孩
and the panels read and the girls chanted:

We are the greatest city,
我们是最伟大的城市,
the greatest nation:
最伟大的国家:
nothing like us ever was.
前所未见,亘古未有。
The doors are twisted on broken hinges.
铰链断了,门变形了
Sheets of rain swish through on the wind
风吹着大雨哗哗涌进来
where the golden girls ran and the panels read:
金色的女孩们四散逃开,镶板上刻着字:
We are the greatest city,
我们是最伟大的城市,
the greatest nation:
最伟大的国家:
nothing like us ever was.
前所未见,亘古未有。
3.
It has happened before.
之前也发生过这样的事情。
Strong men put up a city and got
强人建起一座城市,并将
a nation together,
一个国家团结起来
And paid singers to sing and women
雇来歌手演唱,女人啭鸣:
to warble: We are the greatest city,
我们是最伟大的城市,
the greatest nation:
最伟大的国家:
nothing like us ever was.
前所未见,亘古未有。
And while the singers sang
歌手们演唱的时候
and the strong men listened
强人听着
and paid the singers well
给歌手丰厚的报酬
and felt good about it all,
对一切都感觉良好
there were rats and lizards who listened
老鼠和蜥蜴也听着
... and the only listeners left now
……如今所剩的仅有的听众
... are ... the rats ... and the lizards.
……就是……老鼠……和蜥蜴了。
And there are black crows
还有黑色的乌鸦
crying, "Caw, caw,"
叫着,“呱,呱”
bringing mud and sticks
衔来泥土和树枝
building a nest
筑起巢穴
over the words carved
在那些字的上面
on the doors where the panels were cedar
那些字刻在雪松木的门板上
and the strips on the panels were gold
门板镶着金饰
and the golden girls came singing:
金色的女孩们曾在那里唱着:
to warble: We are the greatest city,
啭鸣着:我们是最伟大的城市,
the greatest nation:

The only singers now are crows crying, "Caw, caw,"

And the sheets of rain whine in the wind and doorways.
还有在风中、在门廊哭喊着的大雨
And the only listeners now are ... the rats ... and the lizards.
而如今唯一的听众就是……老鼠……和蜥蜴了。

The feet of the rats
老鼠的脚
scribble on the door sills;
在门槛上乱踩;
the hieroglyphs of the rat footprints
脚印留下的象形文字
chatter the pedigrees of the rats
揭示老鼠的家谱
and babble of the blood
and gabble of the breed
of the grandfathers and the great-grandfathers
of the rats.
以及老鼠的
祖父和曾祖父的
含糊不清的血缘和品种
And the wind shifts
风改变了方向
and the dust on a door sill shifts
门槛上的灰尘被吹动
and even the writing of the rat footprints
现在,就连老鼠脚印留下的字迹
tells us nothing, nothing at all
about the greatest city, the greatest nation
都不能透露关于这个最伟大的城市、最伟大的国家的
任何信息了,完全不能
where the strong men listened
强人曾经在这里聆听
and the women warbled: Nothing like us ever was.
女人的啭鸣:前所未见,亘古未有。
