Deverbization - V-ing Gerunds (Part 2)

Only one verb can appear in a single sentence in English. Other words with action meanings must be "de-verbized" to make them no longer verbs. The de-verbized words will become the following four types :

(gerund V-ing) (infinitive to + original V) (present participle V-ing) (past participle V-en)


This article will introduce the situation where it becomes (gerund V-ing) after de-verbization:


Case A] The object of the following verbs will often be a gerund

enjoy, mind, practice, finish, avoid, admit,

deny, imagine, consider, risk, appreciate, anticipate,

suggest/recommend, keep/go on, discuss, miss, quit, postpone


  1. She enjoys being with him . He likes being with him.
  2. Would you mind answering the door for me ?
  3. practiced swimming again and again before the contest.
  4. Your sister already finished doing her homework .
  5. We all should avoid being rude to others .
  6. The suspect did not admit killing the victim .
  7. They did not deny going steady with each other.
  8. I cannot imagine living like that .
  9. Will you consider joining this game ?
  10. The surgery will risk losing her child .
  11. We appreciated being invited to this meeting.
  12. My company anticipates cooperating with your company in the near future.
  13. The PM strongly suggested cancelling this business plan .
  14. I will keep/go on reading this novel.
  15. They want to discuss running a business with us .
  16. He misses being single .
  17. You should quit smoking for your health.
  18. The government will postpone passing the new law due to the pandemic.


Case B] The verbs go and come mean to do something/activity, the object of which will often be a gerund

go for .. activities

come move.. do something


  1. Let's go hiking this weekend.
  2. I seldom go shopping recently. I rarely go shopping recently.
  3. The kid came running with smile.


Case C] The object of these verb phrases will often be a gerund

give up to give up, feel like want/feel like, end up to become, devote to devote to

insist on insist, embark on start/engage, look forward to expect, can't help


  1. Do not give up chasing your dream .
  2. I feel like eating out tonight.
  3. He will end up begging on the street.
  4. These scientists devoted to studying this field of unknown.
  5. They still insisted on hitting the road in nasty weather.
  6. We embarked on addressing this issue last week.
  7. I look forward to receiving your reply. I look forward to receiving your reply.
  8. She always cannot help spending all her salary once she has it.
