How to view the relationship between Hong Kong and VPN
Here I hope to elaborate on two issues, the first is how to treat Hong Kong VPN service providers, and the other is how to choose a VPN for Internet users in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong is the transit center in the Asia-Pacific region of the global Internet. If many users in mainland China need to bypass the wall, the preferred server location must be Hong Kong, because it is the closest to mainland China, so the distance between the server and the user equipment is the shortest, and the delay is the smallest. Thereby, it can achieve the speed advantage that other regions cannot achieve. However, due to the recent events, many people may start to worry about whether the servers in Hong Kong will have hidden dangers in information security, and whether the VPN located in Hong Kong by the headquarters or the operation department can effectively protect the information security of users. Regarding this point, my personal opinion is: whether it is a server or a VPN headquartered in Hong Kong, its information security can still be guaranteed in the near future. "Recent" refers to the time limit of about 6 months, and the specific situation will depend on the future. Depends on how the situation develops. But if you have not yet chosen a VPN service provider, then I suggest you exclude service providers in Hong Kong. After all, there are risks in the unknown. This is my consistent philosophy.
If you, as an Internet user in Hong Kong, want to choose a VPN to protect your online privacy. Then I also have a few small suggestions, which I hope can serve as a reference for you: First: give up the VPN service provider in Hong Kong. Second: When choosing a VPN, be sure to choose a service provider with no logging. Third: The transmission encryption algorithm should be selected as high-level as possible. Fourth: Avoid choosing VPN service providers in the 5 Eyes, 9 Eyes, and 14 Eyes alliance regions. At the same time, install the VPN to all your everyday internet-connected devices such as your phone, computer, etc.
Around January 10, 2021, it was discovered that IP addresses in Hong Kong began to block the first-ever website, and the ISP service providers that reportedly blocked the website included: SMARTONE, CMHK, HKBN, PCCW, etc. The blocked website is a website called Hong Kong Chronicle . This site is connected to the Hong Kong server through VPN over the wall to access the website and it shows that it cannot be opened, but it can be accessed normally by switching to other regions such as the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada. After that, the station changed its IP address, but immediately the new IP was blocked again. Now Hong Kong people need to bypass the wall to access this website. In fact, it doesn't matter which website is blocked. What matters is the first case in Hong Kong. It is believed that more websites will be added to this network blocking blacklist in the near future. Can we call it: Hong Kong Great Wall Network Firewall.
