《Wandering Son》Murai Recommended
Readers who are familiar with Hui Tai know that I like to follow the plot to write the aftermath, and I rarely write a work recommendation without any spoilers, because since I have read it all, of course, I also want to express my feelings on the plot by the way. Unless the work is so good that I can't resist writing an article to promote it before I've finished it, or for any particular reason, I usually write spoilers throughout.
But today's work "The Prodigal Son", I want to push it without thunder first, because I know that even if I write a review, not necessarily people will see it, because it is too unpopular, so unpopular I know that even if I write it, it will No one shared it with me. (Or maybe there is a hint of it? After all, Matters has everyone xd)
Why is this 2011 anime so little known? First, limited by the subject matter of the work, "The Prodigal Son" is a work that focuses on exploring the psychology of sexual minorities, especially transgender people in their teenage years. It's hard to add a hit to the surface. Second, the narrative rhythm of the work itself is slow and hot, and the behavior and psychology of the characters have the opportunity to cause controversy among the audience, so even if you start watching, you may not watch it.
But I still want to recommend this work to everyone.
Because I think that even there are many works about sexual minorities on the market now, such as many BL/lily works, most of them are in a more entertaining way, only presenting the ambiguous atmosphere between them, and finally satisfy the rotten female otaku of fantasy. And I personally think that in the field of Japanese animation, there are few animations that can explore the confusion and instability that sexual minorities must experience in their teenage years like this work. What's more, the description of this work is quite well done.
"The Prodigal Boy" mainly tells the story of Shuichi Nitori, a boy who wants to be a girl, and Kano Takatsuki, a girl who wants to be a boy. In the process of growing up, the two face the confusion and struggle of gender identity, the difference between themselves and the external environment. The main perspective of the story is Shuichi, which is limited to 12 episodes of animation, and most of the writing and ink are spent on describing his psychology.
And I think that even excluding the particularity of the subject matter of "The Prodigal Son" and just talking about its completion as a work, I still think this is a work worth watching. Although its narrative rhythm is slow and hot, it is very delicate, the emotional expression is restrained but not sensational, and the psychological changes of each character are depicted in a very slender and immersive sense. The literary atmosphere conveyed by the overall work is also quite immersive. And the final result also has an aftertaste.
So if you think you haven't watched an anime with a good storytelling for a long time, welcome to watch "The Prodigal Son". Please don't be deterred by its subject matter, because it will surely bring you more or less reflections and perspectives on sexual minorities.
Here, I recommend it to everyone, "The Prodigal Son".
