Immigration is a life-long event. Starting from a decision, preparing documents, applying for a visa, etc. are complicated and must be cautious procedures. Even if all formalities are completed, there are many things to prepare for during the departure phase. In order for everyone to be fully prepared, today Lighthouse will share with you the things you need to pay attention to before leaving for Canada. I hope you can reach the new place smoothly and start another journey in your life.

Immigration departure document passport

Personal documents are arguably the most important item for entering other countries. When you go, be sure to check the passport expiry date of yourself and all accompanying family members, which must be valid for three years or more.

Immigrant Visa Preparation

In addition to a passport, a valid visa is also one of the necessary items to enter Canada. When you receive your work visa or study visa, the first thing you must check is that the name and date above are correct.

Immigration medical report preparation

In addition, all immigration countries require arrivals to undergo a medical examination to confirm that your medical condition does not impose a significant burden on their medical system. Therefore, please make sure that the pre-entry medical examination report is not expired before departure.

Immigration eTA electronic travel document preparation

Generally speaking, non-Canadian citizens need to have an electronic travel document (eTA ) to enter Canada. eTA needs to be applied online in advance. Every person entering Canada needs to apply, and only one person can apply at a time. That is to say, if you plan to enter Canada with a family of three, you need to apply three times. Generally, you will receive approval by email within minutes of submitting your application. In a small number of cases, applicants need to submit supporting documents, in which case it will take several days to process.

Canadian Immigration Document Preparation

Throughout the process of processing Canadian immigration visas , you may continue to receive documents officially issued to you by the Canadian government, many of which need to be carried with you. You will be required to produce the original documents before your entry will be granted.

In addition to official documents, there are also some documents that need to be presented to the airline counter and ground staff before boarding.

  • Visa approval documents, including the visa of the main applicant and the visas of partners and children (eg OWP Approval Letter, SOWP Approval Letter, Minor Study Permit Approval Letter, etc.)
  • Job Offer Letter
  • Exemption Letter issued by IRCC (all applicants who apply for OWP will receive this letter, the purpose is to allow people without Job Offer to enter Canada and find work)
  • Return air ticket (enters with tourist visa need to show return air ticket, immigrant people can buy air tickets that can change the date continuously)
  • Withdrawal Letter, Resignation Letter, Lease Resignation Letter
  • Deposit / proof of funds
  • Proof of relationship (such as marriage certificate and birth certificates of children, etc.)
  • Quarantine hotel rental certificate, Canadian temporary lease
  • Covid-19 pin paper
  • Negative Covid-19 test report (The Canadian government has announced that from April 1 this year, fully vaccinated persons can be exempted from this, and those who have only received one shot or have never received the new coronary pneumonia vaccine still need to prepare)
  • ArriveCAN receipt
  • Appointments for Covid-19 testing at airports. There are currently 4 international airports in Canada that are open to passengers, including Montreal, Toronto, Calgary, and Vancouver, and each airport has a unit responsible for Covid-19 testing. Immigrants need to make an appointment at the airport for testing on the website of the responsible unit before they can enter the country. Each person over the age of 5 needs to make a separate appointment, and when making an appointment, they must fill in the expected date and time of entry. The responsible units for each airport are as follows:
  • Montreal: Biron Groupe Sante
  • Toronto: Switch Health
  • Calgary: Government of Alberta
  • Vancouver: LifeLabs
  • Shipping Packing List

Immigrant Health Insurance Preparation

Due to the high cost of medical care for non-Canadian citizens, we recommend that you purchase travel insurance for about a month before departure, and choose a plan that can be extended. Register with the local medical insurance plan after entering the country. Since the processing may take time, stop your travel insurance only after obtaining the protection of the local medical insurance plan.

In addition, dental services (tooth cleaning, filling, etc.), as well as glasses and contact lenses, can also be done in Hong Kong before departure. After all, the local fees are also very expensive.

When purchasing travel insurance, be sure to take care of other insurance policies in Hong Kong, and carefully decide whether to renew or surrender your policy.

Immigration Banking and Financial Preparation

About six months before departure, you can start arranging for the lease or release of the property in Hong Kong (of course, you need to consider whether your own situation needs to keep the property in Hong Kong). Arrange tax advisory services if required.

If you plan to apply for a mortgage to buy a property in Canada, you can first apply for a credit rating in Hong Kong.

Three months before departure, you can arrange to go to the tax bureau to clear the tax, and go to the Civil Affairs Bureau to swear that you will leave Hong Kong for a long time. Then integrate the MPF account and apply for withdrawal of MPF. But it must be noted that if you apply for an open work permit OWP or a study permit SP, not all MPF companies accept this as a reason for withdrawal, please check with your MPF company first.

Some people choose to open a Canadian bank account in Hong Kong in advance, and there is no problem in opening it when they go there. When entering Canada, each person can bring up to 10,000 Canadian dollars in cash, and can also be exchanged in advance.

Canadian pet immigration and other document preparation

  • People with pets who will bring pets to immigration must arrange pet immigration procedures in advance and allow sufficient time. Owners also need to have a good understanding of the local requirements and regulations for the entry of pets in order to prepare the required documents as soon as possible.
  • If you want to keep your mobile phone number in Hong Kong, you can switch to a suitable monthly fee plan and apply for a local calling card in advance. In addition, we also recommend that you prepare a calling card that can receive messages from Hong Kong, so as to facilitate handling of Hong Kong's hands.
  • Those with license plates can apply for an international driver's license in Hong Kong and apply for a driver's license certificate at the same time, and the waiting time can be reduced when taking a license plate test in Canada. In addition, when buying car insurance in Canada, you need to submit a driving score record, which can be applied in Hong Kong.
  • Finally, in order to avoid a lot of unnecessary costs, remember to cancel all contracted and non-essential services before leaving Hong Kong.

Five things to do after arriving in Canada

1. Canadian immigration to open a bank account

If you do not have an account in Hong Kong, you need to open a local bank account. There are many banks in Canada that provide free account opening services for new immigrants, and there will be welcome discounts. Larger banks in Canada include: Scotiabank, CIBC, BMO, RBC, TD. You can make a local comparison before deciding which bank to open an account with.

2. Canadian immigration application for Social Insurance Number (SIN)

Whether you are studying or working in Canada, you will need this Social Insurance Number . This is the number used by the Government of Canada to record the income, taxes, benefits, grants, etc. of all Canadians with legal working status. Without a SIN, you cannot legally work in Canada and your employer cannot pay.

3. Open a calling card in Canada

If you do not apply in advance in Hong Kong, you can apply to Bell or Rogers telecom operators after arriving in Canada, both of which are relatively large telecom operators in Canada. In addition, there are also many Chinese agents who offer discounts on calling cards to new immigrants.

4. Apply for a driver's license in Canada

Basically, a private car is a must in Canada, and a driver's license can also be used as a daily identity document. Normally, if you have held a license plate in Hong Kong for more than two years, as long as you pass the vision test and written test, the applicant can directly apply for the road test, and as long as you pass the test, you will have a Canadian driver's license.

5. Enroll in a health insurance plan

Each province in Canada has its own medical card program, and all OWP holders can apply. However, each province has different cases, you can first understand the application method in your own province.
