This series of articles outlines the process of establishing large-scale plantations in the Mekong River basin from the European colonial period to the present, and what development paths the countries in the basin have embarked on. We first examine the historical causes of the development of large-scale plantations, especially the ideological and political and economic factors in the historical periods of colonialism, nationalism, and neoliberalism. We then describe the development of large plantations, in particular their size, transnational linkages, and socio-environmental changes. We also describe the responses of farmers, civil society groups, government agencies and plantation companies to trends in large plantations and reflect on potential future trends in large plantations.
