The Fault in Our Stars - Memory method for emotional people
(Written in 2021) (Contains spoilers)
I know that the original novel is very famous, and it has been a movie that has been on the to-watch list for a long time, but I always thought that the content would be old-fashioned and even bloody, so the priority has always been relatively low. I recently discovered that the drama was about to be released on Netflix, so I finally watched it.
The Fault in Our Stars (Hong Kong translation: The beautiful shortcomings in life) tells the story of two cancer patients who met at a cancer support organization and fell in love, even though they couldn't escape the ending when one of them died of a serious illness and the other was heartbroken. , but I think it is still a love movie that can be watched.
It’s easy to think that dramas or movies where the main character has a terminal illness are corny without even watching it. In fact, if you suffer from a terminal illness in reality, how can you be criticized as corny? It’s cliché just because many screenwriters in the past used the same formula when putting the element of terminal illness (or amnesia) in their scripts: the protagonists meet -> fall in love -> finally get together after experiencing ambiguity or misunderstanding -> suddenly discover that one of them has a terminal illness (usually Final period)... It doesn't matter whether the ending is a happy ending or a sad ending. The point is that terminal illness is always used as a "turn" in the transition. It may be okay the first time you watch it, but you will feel tired after watching it a few times. It feels corny.
In terms of casting, the male and female protagonists in the movie are not typical handsome men and beautiful women in foreign movies, but it is closer to reality because of this. In the play, both of them were suffering from cancer. When they met, neither was "whole". Hazel, the heroine, only had one lung left, and Augustus, the hero, lost half of his leg. Gus often holds an unlit cigarette in his mouth and says it is a metaphor, "You put the thing that does the killing right between your teeth, but you never give it the power to kill you." He looks cool, but in fact those cigarettes that never light up are his tranquilizers, concealing his anxiety about his condition. Gus is actually very insecure and always talks about being afraid of being forgotten. In his last days, Hazel asked Gus: Isn’t it enough that she remembers him? Why is he so obsessed with doing something big for the world to remember? ?
One of the moving parts is the code words "Okay?" "Okay." between Hazel and Gus, imitating Gus's good friend Isaac and his ex-girlfriend, which represents "Always?" "Always." "Maybe 'okay' will be our 'always'", this okay starts with Hazel and Gus, which means they will always support each other. The movie ends with this code word, which is heart-pounding and heartbreaking. This "okay" also reminds me of the ending in "Painless Love" where Joel represents the "okay" that tolerates Clementine. The word "okay" is very important, and each of these two movies contains an entire love story.
The memory method of emotional people is that because they have been emotionally touched (for me, the more common ones are touching and sadness), they will be very impressed by that movie. If Apply applies to real life, you will unconsciously remember something that made you sad or moved, and you will realize that your memory pattern is because someone once said to me, "So you are so grudge-y" (laughing), because I can be good Carefully tell me a little thing that made me feel hurt. The fact that this movie made me write this long article is proof that it touched a lot of people~
But it has always been said that a person is emotional. In fact, it is more personal than rational rather than emotional. In the play, Hazel dragged the oxygen machine step by step in the Anne Frank House and climbed up to where Anne Frank was hiding. The kiss scene with Gus was really deducted for me. The tourists nearby applauded and said "Bravo!" !?errr...Oh no, it’s too verbose. This is probably my rational expression, haha😆
