China-funded construction of a China-Laos international railway through Laos, a key project of the Belt and Road Initiative, will be fully operational by the end of 2021. The China-Laos International Railway is not only the core of the economic projects shaping the Belt and Road Initiative, but also the first large-scale passenger and freight railway since the founding of Laos. It connects the Chinese market with the markets of other countries and ports in Southeast Asia, and has a significant impact on the economy of Laos and the entire Mekong River Basin.
