讀書札記|"...therefore the bald are not stumps."

διὰ τοῦτο οἱ φαλακροὶ οὐ κολοβοί., a phrase from Metaphysics 1024a, 28, to the effect of "Therefore, baldness cannot be called diminished". There is a premise that this sentence is fun.

In paragraphs 1024a, 11-28, Aristotle is dissecting the meaning of the adjective κολοβόν, giving the simple definition that only the quantity which can be divided in the whole is called κολοβόν, which I roughly translate as "to detract" . This translation is because he mentioned later that the number cannot be κολοβόν, so it is not a simple "subtraction". The absence of an important part or a decisive part can be called κολοβόν.

Under this premise, he said that bald people cannot be called κολοβόν. The implication is that the hair follicles of bald people, the decisive part of the pair of hair, are not missing, and the decisive part is still there, proving that there is still a "possibility" for hair to grow. .

So this sentence, Mr. Aristotle, using the metaphor of the word κολοβόν, blesses alopecia sufferers with the possibility of regrowing their hair with the decisive follicles.
