First experience of presenting at the University of Tokyo academic seminar
The first experience of publishing at the University of Tokyo academic seminar - Taiwan's policies and experiments in DAO in 2023.
I attended the DAO UTokyo seminar a few days ago and spent two days on the campus named after Ginkgo. I didn’t see the ginkgo, but I did encounter the rare snow scene of Todai Akamon (Goshouden Gate).
DAO UTokyo is the first seminar in Asia organized by academic institutions with the theme of Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAO). It is co-sponsored by the University of Tokyo, Stanford University and the Decentralized Research Center (DRC) of Canada.
It is always a pleasure to participate in seminars. In addition to being able to physically meet the authors of many articles (masterpieces from a16z, various governments, and research institutions), you can also reminisce with friends from various countries who are traveling on this road. The research group with the theme of DAO is still very niche in this world, so at every gathering, you will generally see the same group of people.
The biggest gain from participating in this seminar is that it is no longer to understand the trends of the world, but to have a clearer understanding of where we are in the world. Compared with the light-speed development of AI and other technologies, the evolution of DAO has not made much progress in the past year. At present, relevant research is still making detailed adjustments at the level of regulations, citizen autonomy and new technologies. This is roughly the same as the research results conducted by Taiwan last year.
The Taiwanese speaker who shined in the seminar this time was Frank Hu . He shared his experience with scholars from various countries on what he had accomplished last year, commissioned by the Ministry of Digital Development and developed by the Development Culture Foundation (&da0), and received a lot of praise. I just added some context to the panel at the beginning.
A total of two things will be done in 2023, namely research and verification.
The research results are included in the "DAO Governance Framework Analysis Plan", which I personally think is a rare and good book in the traditional Chinese world. In addition to defining what a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) is, it also analyzes the trends related to DAO regulations in various countries, especially the "Decentralized Autonomous Organization Model Law" proposed by the "Coalition of Automated Legal Applications (COALA)" 》(The DAO Model Law), COALA participates in different international Internet organizations, such as the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) and the Worldwide Information Network Consortium (W3C), and the DAO Model Law has also become the DAO-related regulations promulgated by countries around the world and states in the United States. basis. For me personally, DAO Model Law has become the cornerstone of an "interoperable" agreement between organizations.
The most special aspect of the "Plan" is the combination with Taiwan's relevant laws and regulations. For example, taking stock of the possibility of DAO operating in the form of corporate entities, corporate foundations, or even "unincorporated groups", the Plan concludes that DAO has the opportunity to first land in the jurisdiction of Taiwan as an unincorporated organization. And this final result became the goal of "technical verification".
Taiwan has a very special card called "Organization and Group Credential IC Card" (XCA). Compared with natural person certificates issued to natural persons, XCA is for groups. Interestingly, XCA covers relatively vague unincorporated groups other than legal persons, such as priest guilds, baseball teams, etc. Therefore, in 2023, the technical verification in the DAO field will be to tie DAO and XCA together. The project name is "RXCA" (Resilence XCA)
The technical verification part of RXCA uses the existing Government Key Infrastructure (GPKI) and two common standards of Ethereum, namely ERC-4824 and ERC-5484. ERC4824 is released by DAOStar and is the "Common Interfaces for DAOs" (Common Interfaces for DAOs), which is used to formulate interoperable DAO metadata. Currently, ERC4824 has derived from DAOIP-1 to DAOIP-4, which is very interesting; and ERC- 5484 is "Consensual Soulbound Tokens". This agreement sets SBT so that the token can be "revoked" for certain reasons under the premise of an agreed consensus. In the case of RXCA, it is Life cycle management of DAO credentials. This technical verification has been completed in 2023, and it has been confirmed that the technical level is feasible.
This means that if the regulations or orders are improved in the future and the deployment of relevant competent authorities is completed, decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) will be able to be implemented in Taiwan and have interfaces for interaction with other groups and even the government. But I don’t know how many years it will take to get to this point.
Through the above opportunity to participate in DAO UTokyo, Frank shared the research and verification content of DAO in Taiwan last year, which received a great response and opened up many opportunities for cross-border cooperation.
I personally believe that in the long history of human civilization, organizational concepts such as transnational, gig-work, mobile democracy and decentralized resource management such as DAO will gradually mature, and how a sovereign country embraces such new concepts will slowly affect the country. The role of the country in the digital society will even affect the future digital economic situation.
I feel very cherished and satisfied to be able to participate in DAO-related planning at such an early age.
The research results mentioned above have all been made public.
