The Lumen Prize ceremony was held at the Barbican Centre in the UK yesterday, and the list of winners was announced. This year is the first time that the Lumen Prize has established a non-fungible token award (NFT Award), which has passed since the announcement in March. After half a year, what works finally won the final honor?

The Lumen Award is an international award for digital art. Since its inception in 2012, in addition to awards, non-profit organizations have also held a number of exhibitions, forums, and seminars. Taiwanese artist Wang Liansheng won the first prize in the sculpture category of the Lumen Award in 2018. In the same year, German artist Mario Klingmann won the award for his creation of "The Butcher's Son" with AI tools. This should be the first time that an artist has won an art award with artificial intelligence creation tools. The Lumen Prize embraces technology in the digital art world and encourages artists to use art to make a point.

This year's Lumen Awards accepts the sponsorship of NFT art media Right Click Saved to establish NFT awards, and accepts applications from artists, art groups, and DAOs. This is the first time that there is an international award with NFT as the art category.

Back to the winning entries. The winning work is called "Rituals - Venice", which is a composite generative art work, in addition to the NFT chain world, it also crosses into the real world. This work is a collaboration between Aaron Penne x Boreta, one produces visual art and the other produces sound. Together, it is an audio-visual art work. This is a dynamically changing window, the shape follows the sound, and the sound is a certain A synthetic meditation and singing bowl sound. The visual and sound dynamics of this piece can last for nine million years without repetition, which the artist uses to express the permanence of NFTs and digital art.

A total of 1,000 copies of "Ritual-Venice" were issued on Artblocks, a generative art platform. So far, the transaction volume has exceeded 1,000 ETH. At the same time, "Ritual - Venice" cooperated with the digital art gallery Bright Moments. The first 200 NFTs use Live Mint. Collectors must go to the venue in Venice, Los Angeles, USA, under the guidance of a therapist, to obtain a unique meditation process. Generate audiovisual art experiences. (Interested people can watch the interview video) Bright Moments' most famous action is called Crypto Citizens, which has been held in nearly ten international first-tier cities. Collectors must go to the scene to get their own encrypted citizen NFT Facebook.

In addition, Aaron Penne x Boreta also recorded the sound of the first few NFTs and published them on Soptify, you can listen directly, but you can also directly click on the Artblocks page to listen to the endless window of music and changes.

The above is a brief introduction to the first prize in the NFT category of the Lumen Award. In addition to the selection and evaluation of the winning works, there are also a large number of interview materials for NFT art, and supporters from different positions talk to each other. The following is an excerpt from an interview with Lumen Award founder Carla Rapoport, Lumen Award judge and Whitney Museum curator Christiane Paul, and Right Click Saved founder Jason Bailey.

Jason asked Lumen Prize founder Carla if they faced backlash when they decided to add NFT prizes? Carla said not at all (Not a dick bird), and even Christiane, a digital art curator and well-known critic, strongly supported it. Christiane believes that in the NFT community, there is no so-called unified mainstream narrative, and different artist groups have immersed themselves in the new void in completely different ways, "So I will not use the general digital art or analog art to judge NFT. Art". Below is a snippet of Jason's interview with Christiane that I found very rewarding.

"As a judge, evaluating art and its complexity makes the criteria of judgment a moving target. The primary method of evaluating art involves how it embodies or translates an interesting concept through different mediums." "Web3 so far may be the A concept, not an existing reality. How Web3 works depends on how people think.”

“I am most excited by the critique and poetic approach of digital art to new technologies. Over the past decade, we have seen many new technologies enter a new stage, such as AR and AI. Artists have been exploring and promoting these technologies, whether in virtual Simulating itself in the world, or bringing out the biases of big data, that's how artists ask questions. I'm very excited about the artist's "Reality Check" of digital progress. "

Jason asked: "NFTs are often criticized. NFTs make art tend to the capital market. Although digital art has existed for a long time, he has been ignored to some extent. With the popularity of NFTs, art and cultural institutions have become more and more interested in digital art. The more interested you are, what do you think?"

Carla: "NFT, as a new technology, came to the art world first. There is no computer revolution, no artificial intelligence, and no network art. For some reason, NFT first entered the world of digital art before it flourished in other fields, so any Anyone who wants to understand NFTs must first understand digital artists.”

“And Geeks are everywhere. There is nothing better for Geeks than discussing technology, we talk to artists from all over the world who have been selling their work through NFTs. NFTs provide a new opportunity for the global artist community , to make money without galleries or institutions. Then auction houses started coming in and it was just the beginning. Now the controversy over NFTs is over.”

Finally, Carlo responds to the social role of the artist: "What is the value of art or the function of the artist in society? I often say "artists offer a different facet to the most important things in life." We live in a technology-driven era, More than ever, we need artists to guide us. "
