Shanghai - the only place to open your arms

I hid in the basement of my rental house all day, eating brown bread. The landlord ordered me to move out next week and treated me like a rat driving away the Black Death. But where can I go? I only have one month's worth of savings and I have no relatives in Germany. The only relative with whom I have correspondence is my mother's sister, who is in the United States.

Just when I was anxious, the invasion of the Nazi army completely solved my worries. They took me to Dachau concentration camp on the second day of "Crystal Night." Well, now I have a place to live and a lot of roommates. I really don't want to recall the days there. I have left behind many prints, you will know by looking at them.

All around, I was released, skinny. I seem to see hell. I escaped today, will I be able to survive in the future? I'm getting out of here. But the rest of the world doesn't seem to welcome a Jew without a passport like me. My mother's sister sent me some money, which she enclosed in the package: "This is all the savings I can give you to buy a ticket, dear David, I know your life is difficult, but Forgive me, I can't do anything but this."

I took the money and sat in the cafe with the broken glass. People come and go, this fat middle-aged man is always running to the US consulate, hoping to get visas for him, his wife, and his son, but time and time again, like Sisyphus pushing a stone to no avail. The young man who is only 20 this year, he originally wanted to study physics at the University of Munich, but he was also expelled like me. Where can he go? Mumbai, London, Buenos Aires, the names of these cities are passed on by word of mouth among Jews, but they can't get a VISA to leave.

Until Shanghai , the city far in the East opened its doors for us.
