Reading Notes "Saving the Mobile Brain: 5 Minutes a Day to End Digital Anxiety and Get Back Happiness and Concentration"
●The reality we face is:
- People touch their phones an average of 2,600 times a day and stare at them for an average of 4 hours a day.
- The phone did not upgrade humans to version 2.0, but downgraded to version 0.5.
-Learning, memory, and concentration will deteriorate just by keeping your phone close to you.
- Social media has a mechanism to incite the reward center of the brain, and the APP was developed using the "reward system" mechanism that can release happy substances in the brain.
- The person who developed the Facebook "Like" feature said that Internet addiction is as dangerous as heroin.
- You spend a lot of time roaming the Internet, and you also make a lot of money for big companies.
●Why do so many people feel uneasy even though they are not afraid of material scarcity? Why feel lonely despite being connected to others in an unprecedented way? Later, I came to understand that part of it was because the world we live in today is very different in nature to human beings. This asymmetry, in other words, the inconsistency of the environment around us with the results of human evolution, has an effect on the mind.
●Sleep, exercise, and connection with others are three important factors that protect individuals from mental disorders. This is also clearly pointed out in the research report. Once these activities are reduced, the physical condition will be poor, because the elements of maintaining the body are missing. From this we can understand why the mental state has deteriorated despite the fact that life is more comfortable.
●The human body and brain were not built to be free from cancer or heart disease. It evolved to protect itself from starvation, drought and infectious diseases. This is where your brains and mine excel, because we are the descendants of humans who have survived the hardships.
●At the moment of the COVID-19 crisis, digital tools are like a bridge to communicate with the outside world. But it has also caused some problems, and now some rumors or conspiracy theories can spread through social media faster than the virus. While such rumor-mongering is a very natural by-product of a crisis, it used to be spread among a few people, but now it reaches millions of people in a matter of hours. The spread of disinformation is so large that even the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned: "As the virus spreads, we are also attacked by an 'infordemic'."
●It can be seen through research that just as a sloppy personal computer can be hacked, our brains can also be hacked. Smart businesses have taken advantage of this for a long time, and they do it by producing something that grabs everyone's attention. If you thought that every time we took our phones out of our pockets we were acting on our own will, you would be sorely mistaken. The companies that run Facebook, Line, and Instagram have successfully hacked the reward system in our minds.
●Technology is helping human beings in various forms, and of course, it should continue to exist after that. But we must remember that everything has its pros and cons. From here, we can develop products that make people healthy physically and mentally. Instead of exploiting human traits to make money, seek out things that are close and soothing.
● Even in silent mode, the phone still causes interference. Whether it's concentration or working memory, it seems that whenever we want to multitask, it's badly affected. I'm sure you're thinking by now, just turn off your laptop, put your phone on silent mode and put it in your pocket, but it's not that simple. It has amazing magic that can attract people's attention, and the power is so powerful that it can't be resisted by just putting it in a pocket.
●The so-called Google Effect (Google Effect) or Digital Amnesia (Digital Amnesia) refers to the phenomenon that the brain does not actively want to remember when information is stored elsewhere. Moreover, the brain will give priority to remembering the "location" where the information is stored, rather than the information itself.
●Whether it is an adult or a child, there are countless data that indirectly show that the mobile phone has a significant impact on the deterioration of sleep quality. The sensitivity to stress and blue light varies from person to person. Some people find a way to fall asleep quickly as soon as they lie down, even under stress or staring at a screen right before bed. On the other hand, as long as some people encounter a little stress, even if it is only an hour before falling asleep, the mobile phone "enters the line of sight" and will not be able to fall asleep because of this. If you're having trouble sleeping, it's best to avoid things that stress you out, and don't stare at a screen late at night.
● Facebook is used by “everyone” of all generations in almost every country on every continent, and we use it “often”. On average, it takes more than 30 minutes a day to browse photos, read updated messages and share them, accumulate likes, etc. Assuming it will take the same amount of time in the future, when a person who is now 20 years old turns 80, 5 years of life are spent on social media to count, and nearly 3 of them are dedicated to Facebook.
●What are we losing? Humans have an innate urge for instant distraction, and cellphones are right there. "Now that we are distracted not by lions but by cellphones, is it simply that the original human ability to be distracted is restored? Is the brain just evolving according to evolution?" asked a man in a speech. Dao, I was talking about "digital society distracts human beings", which is a good question, and maybe it is exactly what he said. The only problem is that in the process of this happening, we may have lost something fundamental.
● "Being stupid and depressed because of the Internet" - I have often seen such headlines in the tabloids in recent years. In fact, the problem is more complicated than this. Of course, digitization is the biggest social change in human experience, and what we're seeing today is "just the beginning," so I'm sure it's correct.
