Urban chores 1 | I live in a cat city
I live in a city where the cat is the boss. Big cats can be seen everywhere in the city. The cat boss is a big white cat guarding an old street. The big white cat has a distinguished status, and on different festivals, the people will contribute new clothes to it to make it look imposing. Remember, everyone who comes to this city for the first time must come to see the big white cat and worship the wharf!
And this city is really called "Cat City".
When an overseas netizen asks me where I live, I can't just name the city, I usually need to explain it, but maybe the other person still doesn't know where it is.
As soon as I say I live in Kuching, usually the next sentence the other party will ask: Haven't heard of it, where is it?
"A city in East Malaysia, on the island of Borneo."
In the next sentence, people with higher emotional intelligence will say: "There are many forests over there, and it is very hot, right?"
People with low emotional intelligence will say: "Are you that developed? Are you still very backward?" This is considered polite, and I have asked me: "Do you still live in trees?"
When I first encountered such a question, I would explain it, but in the end I gave up and answered directly: "Yes, we live on trees. In the past, when we were underdeveloped, we needed to climb trees, but now we are richer. Well, we all made elevators to get to our house by ourselves. And we all went out on horses and oxen, and we rode crocodiles across the river.”
Such an outrageous answer, there are still some people who believe it!
Located in the capital of Sarawak, East Malaysia, Kuching is a livable city and has been selected as one of the most livable cities in the world. The life here is slow, the pressure is relatively low, the prices are moderate, the place is large but the population is relatively small (about 600,000 people), it is not crowded, and it is a garden city. If you look up, you can still see the blue sky and white clouds!
However, Kuching has all the equipment and things that modernization should have, including advanced medical equipment. It is suitable for people like me who are slow-paced but want to enjoy a modern life. It’s just that no one makes a lot of money. I remember when I graduated, a friend asked me if I wanted to go to Singapore with him to develop and earn SGD. However, when I thought that Singapore has a concentrated population, the pace of life is adjusted too fast, and maybe the work pressure is also high, so I gave up. . Now my friend's salary is more than mine, and they are in Singapore currency, and the exchange is three times the ringgit. I'm glad he made that much, but I'm also content with what I have now.
My friends laughed and teased me for not being aggressive, and I also admitted that although I am still working, is it not good to live a life like semi-retirement? Especially in the past two or three years, after the outbreak of the epidemic, I realized that health is more important than anything else, and that the family can live together in a neat and healthy way, as long as there is enough money.
Therefore, a "home treasure" like me, hoping to be by my family's side, should stay in Kuching obediently.
My requirements are simple, I can talk comfortably in Kuching, my salary is only middle class now, but fortunately I can have my own house, a second-hand double storey terrace house, with an affordable loan, have a A domestic car that has paid off the loan, one of the most convenient oil prices in the world, 1 liter of MYR 2.05, it is not burdensome to drive.
When you still have a little spare money, you can go out and have a look. When you don’t have much spare money, you can invite friends to travel or have a coffee at a party. Kuching has the most cafes, and there are new cafes opened almost every month. It also allows me to buy a few books every month to satisfy my love of reading, although books are getting more and more expensive now.
Although everyone said that Malaysia's Internet Express is not very good, I myself think it is OK. The unlimited home network of more than 100 ringgits per month is enough for me to stay at home every night to write articles, find materials, watch dramas, play games and listen to songs. Wait.
It is still a place blessed by God. There are many beautiful natural environments. We have no natural disasters. We are more afraid of floods, but they are not as terrifying as other places. In summer all year round, when the weather is too hot, God will rain to drive away the heat, and when it rains too much, the sun will come out in time. The air here is fresh and the weather is pleasant. It is really a treasure.
And this is a multi-ethnic place. We have more than 20 ethnic groups living together in harmony, so the food is also diverse. Kuching was awarded the UNESCO City of Creative Food in November 2021. Coming to Kuching can make people who love to eat a feast, which is also very suitable for me who loves to eat and is greedy for fresh food.
The livable Kuching "Cat City" has large cat statues everywhere in the city, and even has the world's only cat museum.
There are many different theories or legends about why it is called Cat City, but the simplest is the Malay name of Kuching, kuching. The homophony means cat in Malay, and the name of cat in Malay is kucing. The difference between the two is the word H. So it's called Cat City.
One of the most widely circulated legends is that there were many mice in Kuching in the past, and the British introduced a large number of cats, and cats were all over the street, so it was called Kuching (homonym of Kuching).
Although Kuching is a cat city, and cats can be seen everywhere, whether it is a cat statue or a real cat, but I always don't have much affection for cats. When I see cats, I will avoid them or hide away. , I am an unqualified cat city person.
Like my work? Don't forget to support and clap, let me know that you are with me on the road of creation. Keep this enthusiasm together!
