Is "working for money" wrong?

“Fight for the things that you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you.”
- Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Two things have touched me recently, one is the death of the famous Notorious RBG – Justice Kingsburg, and the other is the status of the contestants of a variety show "Exciting Offer" not long ago.

September 18, 2020, is destined to be an extraordinary day for many legal practitioners. On this day, the famous American Justice Ginsburg died. She may be a superhero in the eyes of women, a source of strength in the eyes of many ordinary people, and an industry benchmark in the eyes of many legal practitioners. Because of Ginsburg's medical condition, many people may not be shocked by her death. But the death of such a sensitive node before the US election has cast a new layer of fog on the 2020 presidential election.

Justice Ginsburg's life was bumpy, with ups and downs. Whether it was the death of her parents in her early years, helping her lover fight cancer, or fighting her own cancer for many years, her achievements have become more heavy and shining. Therefore, whether or not we agree with her political propositions, it is difficult for us not to respect such an amazing female justice. And her persistence in the legal career and her unremitting life-long efforts have also moved many people.

And "Heartwarming Offer" is a workplace variety show, which records the process of a group of new graduates in the legal industry who have just graduated from a famous law firm for internships and compete for a limited number of regular positions. This is a program from a long time ago, and many of the interns were also eye-catching when it was broadcast. You can feel their excellence and enthusiasm for the legal industry in the program.

What strikes me is the status quo of several of the members, because some of them are not currently preparing to engage in legal-related work, but are preparing to develop in the direction of bloggers. This will undoubtedly lead to a lot of controversy for them. For example, "As a law graduate with excellent software and hardware, they ended up in the entertainment industry. Is it worthy of school education? What about their beliefs? What about their persistence?"

Comments like these remind me of my work life today. People look up to a man like Justice Ginsburg, who has dedicated his life to the law, but often resent people who quit the legal profession to work in entertainment. So what are these "innovators" really doing wrong? I don't think so.

Today's "politically correct" workplace concept always tells us this: work for your ideals and love, not for money. Whenever I hear something like this, I feel very uncomfortable because the person who says it in my mind is either "stupid" or "bad". Just like some bosses want their employees to 996, but don't want to pay overtime. They will persuade employees to work overtime for their own ideals and future, to improve themselves, and to work overtime for "blessings".

Many people look up to see the splendid beauty of their ideals, but at the same time they can only struggle in the cruel reality beneath their feet. Have those who accused those who turned to bloggers ever considered that working in the legal industry is very hard and the rate of return is very low, which often requires a lot of determination, perseverance and long-term investment. Being a blogger will be a profession with a relatively higher degree of freedom and a higher return, especially for the members of these variety shows with a lot of exposure. So, what's wrong with being a blogger for someone who doesn't have the determination to dig deep into the legal industry?

Faith is a word that has been labeled with a positive meaning since ancient times. Beliefs are important, but being bound by them can be dangerous. Jung said this sentence "Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate." After careful experience, it is not difficult to find that the subconscious has a huge influence on us, but many people put the subconscious As a belief and belief, stubbornly stick to it.

So, when we need to make changes, we need to be fully aware of our beliefs and feelings, because we cannot change what we are not conscious of.

Author Suze Casey explains how beliefs, or beliefs are formed, this way: "A belief is a thought that is repeated so often and that has enough emotion attached to it that you accept it as reality." And when we need to Making a change often requires letting go of outdated thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors that are holding us back from living the life we all aspire to. Therefore, for ideals, beliefs, beliefs and other concepts that may exist in our subconscious, we all need to examine and test them from time to time, instead of taking them as standards and authority, dare to challenge and update them when necessary, and don’t turn beliefs into shackles .

We all know the old saying "A gentleman does not stand under a wall of danger". I can feel a game of idealism and realism from this sentence more and more recently. Ideals are very important, but we must be able to identify and perceive the dangers that ideals bring to us, and take precautions and make changes in time. However, if we always change our behaviors and beliefs frequently and avoid dangerous walls, it may also prevent us from cultivating in a certain field and ultimately achieve nothing. So how to master this balance requires a kind of wisdom, able to identify opportunities and risks, and make the right choice. Such thinking is often confusing and painful, especially when choosing a career, how to balance income, status, health, and ideals?

The point is made that work for money, not interest. Because this method provides people with a clear and intuitive goal, which is to make money. The goal is clear, there is no doubt, and there is no need to think hard about the "big questions" of life. At the same time, when we have enough money, we can solve most problems and provide us with more choices and life possibilities. There are many similar supporting arguments, and I won't repeat them here. After all, everyone can think of a hundred kinds of benefits of being rich.

Of course, there are many people who refute this "money-only theory", but it is undeniable that this method provides a (temporary) way out for many confused people. Blindly pursuing money will definitely bring some problems, but isn't life just jumping from one pit to another? If I can't jump out of a pit for a long time, maybe I'll go crazy. So when you are in a state of confusion for a long time, this kind of "working for money" can be regarded as a temporary refuge for people. After all, there are still a few people who have a clear career plan and can actively think about planning their lives.

So we can't say "work for money" or "work for interest and ideals" which is more noble and great, these are just people's own choices to realize the value of their lives. Some people hope to pursue their ideals after they have a certain economic foundation, so that they can concentrate more. Some people want to be able to devote themselves to the industry they love from the beginning, even if the income is lower. We are one of these two types of people.

It is undeniable that more people are actually working for money or wages. After all, in real life, there are very few people with great ideals and ambitions, and very few can persevere for them, and living ordinary and struggling may be the normal state of life for more people. So, what we can really do is understand our own needs, make our own changes, and respect everyone's choices.

Finally, please imagine two article titles like "Achieving Wealth Freedom at 30 Years Old, Just Because He Did Some Things Right" and "Being the Top 1% in the Industry at 30 Years Old, Just Because He Did Some Things Right", Which title do you want to click more? While writing this article, I am also reflecting on myself, have I been shackled by some stubborn "beliefs" in some behaviors and thoughts? Have you commented on the parties because of some one-sided or even untrue reports?
