Today (7/29) marks the 544th day of the military coup in Myanmar.
On July 25, 2022, the Myanmar military government announced in the state-run media "Myanmar Global New Light" that they had executed four political prisoners, including the famous pro-democracy activist Kyaw Min Yu, Ko Jimmy ), former MPs Phyo Zeya Thaw, Hla Myo Aung and Aung Thura Zaw.
The Global New Light of Myanmar did not provide details on the execution of the death penalty, only reporting that "the punishment was carried out in accordance with prison procedures."
It was the first execution by the Burmese government in 35 years—the dictator General Ne Win hanged three Karen National Liberation Army soldiers in 1986 and 1987.
This is the first time the military government has executed a political prisoner since the military coup in Myanmar.
On February 1, 2021, Myanmar Defense Commander Min Aung Hlaing staged a coup d'etat to seize the National League for Democracy (NLD) regime headed by Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Min, and declared a state of emergency.
After the coup d'état, the people all over the country launched a large-scale non-cooperation movement. The former ruling party NLD also established the " National Unity Government " and organized the "People's Defence Army" to resist the military. The junta later also listed the National Unity Government as a terrorist organization, the long-term military conflict on the Myanmar border spread to the city, and armed attacks against the junta broke out across Myanmar.
In January 2022, "Myanmar Now" reported that 52-year-old Kyaw Minyou and 41-year-old Piao Ze Yasang were sentenced to death under the Anti-Terrorism Act. The military alleges that the two led the armed attack on the junta, stashed firearms, ammunition, grenades and explosives in a Yangon apartment to provide weapons, and accused Pyo Tze Yasang of assassinating junta members, participating in more than 100 bomb attacks, and Raising funds from abroad to finance "terrorist activities".
In addition, the two have been accused by the military of being involved in terrorist activities because they participated in Zoom video conferences between the Parallel Governments in Myanmar (CRPH), the National Unity Government (NUG) and the People's Defence Forces (PDF) in the early days of the coup.
A junta spokesman said two other men, Rame Aung and Onturazu, were executed on suspicion of murdering military informants.
Kyaw Minyou: Half a lifetime in jail for Myanmar's democracy movement
Kyaw Minyou, 52, spent almost half of his life a prisoner in order to join the pro-democracy movement.
According to the "Irrawaddy" report, Kyaw Minyou, also known as Ko Jimmy, is a member of the " 8888 Student Movement " and a famous pro-democracy activist in Myanmar. In 1988, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison for participating in the student movement and underground activities, and was not released from prison until 2005; in 2007, he mobilized the student movement elements to join the monk-led "Saffron Revolution" and was sentenced to 5 years in prison. He was released from prison in 2012. .
Kyaw Minyou was executed, leaving behind his 15-year-old daughter and wife Nilar Thein. Nila Ting and Jue Minyou were also imprisoned for the 8888 student movement. But within two or three years after they were released from prison, the two stood on the front line of another major democratic movement, the " Saffron Revolution ": in 2007, the two were once again imprisoned for participating in anti-junta demonstrations, and they will serve only a few months in prison. The eldest newborn daughter is left to the family to take care of. Five years later, the couple are finally reunited after being released from prison.
A few days ago, Nila Ting refused an interview with BBC Myanmar, citing her personal safety. But so far, she is still counting the number of days she has been separated from her husband in a Facebook post and wrote in the online community: "I don't accept alms, don't share grief, and don't have a funeral until I see Jimmy's body."
