Night Talk Replay: Jews and Islam Cairo Library

On the night talk on November 12th, we invited @老城的猫之游 medieval Islam to guide us on our journey through the medieval Islamic world.

I am very happy to host this event and listen to the sharing of cats in the old city with everyone. She is originally from Taiwan and now studying in Israel, and her topics are very interesting and enlightening. I learned a lot about the medieval Islamic world from her lectures, and also gained a deeper understanding of the exchanges between Jewish and Islamic civilizations.

I think this event is a good learning opportunity, allowing us to transcend the barriers of time and space and experience different cultures and histories. I really appreciate that Cat in the Old City uses the documents of the Cairo Library as an entry point, allowing us to experience first-hand the customs and folk customs of the medieval Middle East. Her sharing also allowed us to see the glory of the Golden Age of Islam and the contribution and influence of the Jews during this period.

First of all, I was surprised to find that the Cairo Library is a treasure trove of more than a million manuscripts, including works in various languages ​​and subjects, such as Arabic, Persian, Hebrew, Turkish , mathematics, medicine, philosophy, poetry, etc. These manuscripts reflect the diversity and openness of Islamic civilization in the medieval period, and also bear witness to the cultural and academic activity and creation of the Jews during this period. I think this is a very precious historical resource and a treasure that shows human wisdom and spirit.

Secondly, I was very moved to hear that Jews and Muslims had close cooperation and friendship during the Golden Age of Islam, and they jointly contributed to the development and prosperity of Islamic civilization. For example, Jews have made outstanding achievements in Arabic literature, science, philosophy and other fields. They have also spread knowledge of Greek, Persian, Indian and other cultures to Europe, promoting cultural exchange and integration. I think this is a very beautiful era and an example worthy of our study and reference.

Finally, I was very happy to find that this activity not only allowed us to understand the history and culture of the medieval Islamic world, but also gave us more room for imagination and creation. For example, we can feel the lives and thoughts of people of that era by reading the manuscripts of the Cairo Library, or we can express our understanding and interpretation of that era by creating poems, stories, paintings, etc. I think this is a very interesting and meaningful activity, and it is also an activity that stimulates our imagination and creativity.
