Toronto Diary: 3 months of social marketing abroad, remote work/WFH experience

I really didn't expect to come back to do social marketing in Toronto.

In fact, last year, I watched the Toronto Job Society and saw a British start-up company recruiting Part-time content writers, and they can work remotely! I immediately made a topic and sent a cover letter according to the request of the other party, but unfortunately, the other party responded that my English writing was not good enough, so I was brushed off. After that, I haven't been looking for content-related jobs, but I didn't expect that, after a circle, I'm back again!

Before I share my work experience, I would like to share. Usually, when I apply for an entry-level job (such as an internship), if I know that the other party has read my resume, portfolio, and even interviewed, but there is no time for the following (although many The company also said that only those who are admitted will be notified, but sometimes it is almost a week after waiting, and I still don’t know if I should continue to wait!) I will send an inquiry letter.

For such a letter, you can decide whether to send it according to the image of the company and the atmosphere of the interview, and you can also appropriately add some attitudes that you think the company will appreciate, because this is when you have to show a positive attitude.

References to ask about the other party's admissions news:

 (HR/Interviewer) Hello,
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to interview. Since I have not received the letter yet, I would like to ask, what is the biggest reason if I did not enter your company in the end?
I hope to get your valuable suggestions and tell me which side needs to be strengthened.
I also hope that there will be opportunities to join your team in the future.
Thanks!
(your name)

English version:

 Dear (HR's name)
Thank you for reading my resume and questionnaire.
Since I haven't received any replay yet, I would like to ask, what is the biggest reason if I did not get this position in the end?
I hope to get your valuable suggestions and also hope to have the opportunity to work with your team in the future.
Thank you and I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
(your name)

In fact, I don't think the above two letters are written perfectly. If you have any suggestions that can be strengthened, please leave a message/private message and tell me! I would appreciate it.

Next, let’s get to the point. It’s a personal record. It can only be said that because of the company’s relationship, it cannot be used as a reference for Canada’s work ecology.

Since February this year, I have submitted my resume on the Internet, but it is sad that I basically did not get many replies. In the end, the internship company I entered was still in early March. I went to the company and directly submitted my resume to get an interview opportunity. I will not continue to mention the job search. Starting from the end of March, I can finally go to work!

As everyone knows, just one day at work, it has entered the stage of Work from Home working from home that started because of the epidemic. In fact, for me, the impact is quite big, because I am not familiar with colleagues in various departments, and this is the first time that everyone in the company is working remotely, so I feel very inefficient in terms of communication efficiency. smooth.

The first is the WhatsApp message, there are marketing group, company-wide group, Taiwan department group, Taiwan department + intern group, and then there is the group of my boss and my avatar account. Sometimes, the boss will send the "same message" to different groups, but there are too many overlaps!

In the marketing department in Taiwan, many times the boss will directly tell me the idea, and I will forward the work content to other interns and team members. I'm not used to this, because I have to repeatedly confirm the idea of the demander (the boss), and then I communicate it to others. In fact, it will take a lot of communication time to go back and forth. Ideally, I hope that if everyone can discuss it in one meeting, I don't have to go back and forth waiting for the reply from both sides. Especially because of remote work, everyone’s online time is different, and there is no deadline set in advance, so there is no efficiency.

In addition, I currently have too many email accounts to check, which is a bit confusing.

Then again, at my previous job, the group met at least once a week to discuss the week's work issues and new discoveries at work. In the current company, although there is a routine weekly company-wide meeting at the beginning, it is not very efficient. On the one hand, everyone does not start the online meeting on time, and on the other hand, sometimes everyone does not prepare in advance what to share at the meeting, causing time of the loss.

I haven't had this problem in recent weeks, because... I don't know why there are no weekly meetings... The Taiwan department itself has no meetings, the reason may be because the boss is in the Gu Xin department, and several other team members It's also a part-time job, so it's not easy to find a time when everyone can meet together. Having said that, I personally feel that it is important for a department to have a meeting once a week.

social media business

I am mainly responsible for the company's IG and FB posting, as well as writing company blog articles. Regarding blogging, I'm happy to be doing something that I can start right away, but I'm also worried that I'm still in my comfort zone when I come to Canada.

What I am happy about now is that I have come into contact with wordpress and canvas that I have never used before, and I have to restart the company's email marketing. I should still use the MailChimp I used before.

In terms of community management, it is very interesting that I can do whatever I want. XD At the beginning, I will put the pictures and copywriting I made first in the group to ask everyone's opinions (I used to show the boss and team members before the po text) , but found... there are not too many suggestions, unless it is related to the price of the product, or I can post directly. This surprised me because at Comma we used to really take the word for word.

Even in marketing activities, we do whatever comes to our mind, or we follow up with what our competitors have. There is not much implementation discussion. The boss said that there were activities that were discussed and implemented in detail before, but the benefits were not great. , but the key is to have gimmicks to let others see us, and then leave the details to the business side.

This makes me feel very unaccustomed, because my marketing concept is "the principle of leverage" to focus on the things that can have the greatest effect, but now the company's way is to do everything, and This page was made just to have this title.

Although a lot of posts give me freedom to express myself, I still feel that I have not done it very well.

Remote work/work from home

When this kind of work mode becomes the norm, both the company as a whole and the employees themselves need to change their mentality and prepare. The most likely thing to happen is to become lazy at home, coupled with no meetings, different schedules between team members and little communication, etc., it will cause delays in work projects.

And because I am an intern, I don't want to get involved, but I will gradually become the team leader, and I need to think about how to boost morale and improve the working model.

What's the next step?

If you can transfer to a full-time position (currently as an intern) if it goes well, the first step should be to improve the company's internal communication costs . First, set the meeting time of the Taiwan department where everyone can go online every week, and set the meeting process and meeting minutes, so that you will not feel that every meeting is in vain, and there is no feeling of the following.

Next, I hope that I can organize the work items at hand more efficiently. There are many things that can be done to produce blog articles/FB, IG posts/email marketing/word-of-mouth marketing. plan.

On the other hand, we are also continuing to look for other regular jobs. Although it is a bit difficult under the epidemic, we still need to find ways to make a living.
