The latest superhero movie "Eternals" in the Marvel Comics series was released last month (November) and has been a big hit around the world. However, due to the kissing scenes of same-sex couples in the play, it was requested to be deleted or even banned by many countries at the same time.

The character Phastos, played by Brian Tyree Henry, is the first gay superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Her husband is played by Haaz Sleiman, and the actor himself came out in 2017. The two have a happy family in the play, have a son, and have a warm kiss.

Many countries banned or asked to cut IMDb to suspend ratings to prevent malicious bad reviews

The film was banned in several Middle Eastern countries, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman, though neither the government nor Marvel have explained why. Homosexuality remains a criminal offence in several Middle Eastern countries, and the death penalty is more likely in Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Some countries require films to be cut out of same-sex kissing scenes before release, including the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Lebanon, Iraq, Jordan, Ethiopia, Palestine, Syria, Turkey and Nigeria. Singapore rated the film as M18, and audiences must be at least 18 years old to enter. Singapore's Infocomm Media Development Authority confirmed that the reason was that it involved gay themes and promoted or glorified gay life. On the other hand, because of the same-sex kissing scene in the movie, it received a large number of malicious attacks on the film review website IMDb before its official release, resulting in the website being forced to temporarily close the scoring function.

The director and actors support the box-office performance

Director Zhao Ting was reluctant to edit the plot of the movie to accommodate government censorship: "I don't fully understand the details, but I believe they have discussed it many times. Marvel and myself - we have talked - both very much hope that the movie does not need to be changed." Haas Slivan said at the premiere that the kissing scene was very important: "Can you imagine how many lives this scene can save? Young people, young sexual/sex minorities, bullied, suicidal, Feeling hidden from the world, and now seeing this scene, the result was unexpected."

In response to requests from some countries to cut the plot of the movie, Marvel Studios refused to comply and was banned. Angelina Jolie, who played the warrior Dina in the movie, said: "I feel sorry for those audiences. I also appreciate that Marvel didn't give in." She further said, "I still don't understand why there are still people in the world who can't see the Fastos family and how touching their relationship and love is. To feel angry, threatened, or to oppose or despise the relationship is just ignorance."

Despite the constant controversy, the film performed very well at the box office. Hong Kong received nearly 4 million on the first day of filming, surpassing the 3.16 million of Marvel's previous work "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings". As of November 28, the cumulative box office in Hong Kong has exceeded 49 million. In terms of global box office, the opening weekend received 162 million US dollars, which was the second best result of the Hollywood film opening weekend during the epidemic. The cumulative box office has exceeded 380 million US dollars before the deadline, which can be seen locally and globally. Audiences are happy to see a movie presenting a niche in society.
