Open with Music: Three Variations of Hey Joe

(edited)

In the last year of college, the happiest thing is that I finally have my own computer room and reading room for the class. I don’t have to fight for computers with thousands of other people. The whole computer building is usually full after nine in the morning, and the final exam Even the empty tables without computers were full before 8 o'clock. I am a person who can't study at home. During the exam, I have to get a seat before 7 o'clock. And there is a swipe card in the computer room. We can come and go freely 24 hours a day, which makes me feel so vain. Every time I pass by the overcrowded computer building, I can't help but feel complacent that I have the "privilege".

Another difference is that the class has changed from a hall class with two or three hundred people to a small class with only a dozen or so people, and it is the first time that students can be called by name. There are several boys in the class, all graduated from the best private schools in the city. Without exception, they are all white boys, the only exception is Joe.

Joe is a Pacific Islander ethnicity, with short black curly hair, big black eyes, a wide face, a little strong (does anyone know how to write ㄎㄨㄞˇ in Chinese characters?), always wears shorts, and adds a short coat in winter cap. The boys were super smart and good, and so was Joe, but he seemed a little more thoughtful than his high school buddies.

Once I saw him reading in our reading room, and it wasn't a class assignment (I never saw any of my classmates read a book other than the class assignment at the time), I asked him what he was reading - I was always reading to others Curious about what book, as long as you see someone reading on a bus or train, you can't help but keep staring at people, wondering what they're reading, although that seems rude - Joe showed me the cover of the book, the title seemed to be About militarism and politics in the Pacific islands and stuff like that, I think it was a book about his hometown. He said that the author is his father, and his father is a pastor, in fact, a bishop, which is why he can go to the church's private boys' school, because the school offers tuition waivers for children of the clergy.

The way he talks about his dad shows that he respects his dad very much.

The first time I heard the song "Hey Joe" was on the soundtrack of the movie "The Dreamers" by Bertolucci, the Italian director of "The Last Emperor" (Taiwan then translated this movie into "Love to Make Love to Dream") , that original soundtrack was burned to me by a netizen at that time (yes, that was an era when we were still burning CDs).

I didn't know at the time that it was a big name, a landmark in rock and roll history, about sound and anger.

"Hey Joe" on the soundtrack was covered by Michael Pitt, who played the American youth in the film. The film "The Dreamers" is very attractive from the poster to the outline: the film's background is set in Paris, which was turbulent due to the student movement in 1968. An American young man came to Paris and met a pair of twin brothers and sisters. I was looking forward to that movie while listening to that soundtrack over and over again.

When I finally saw this movie, it was far from what I expected. I wasn't too impressed with the movie, but still listening to the soundtrack years later.

At that time, Michael Pitt was like little Leonardo. Where has he been all these years? And Eva Green fascinated everyone in this movie, and then she became the love of the sexiest Pound Daniel Craig in Casino Royale, and then nothing I remember or watch for years 's movie... Waiting until Tim Burton's "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children", I was shocked: eh, she is also old enough to play an aunt.

Then I finally listened to Jime Hendrix's original version too. I vaguely knew that this song was important, but I never understood the ins and outs of its musical history. I "knew" Jimi Hendris was great, but I didn't seem to have heard any of his other songs.

That year, it should have been between when I heard this song and finally saw the movie.

And then actually at that time I thought Joe was so cute. I remember the instant messenger at the time - well it was actually MSN (whoops I'm exposing myself to be an old man again) - there seemed to be a status or profile that could be changed, I replaced it with hey joe, I was On MSN, I told the girl who burned the CD for me about this, and she said: You are.

Joe is not online very often. Once I saw him online, I was very happy to say hi to him, but the other party replied: This is his mother (fortunately I didn’t talk nonsense)

I remember that Joe and his other two buddies were admitted to the graduate programme of a top company before graduating (their other buddy named Holmes went to another company, foreigners really have the surname Holmes, they are all called He Holmsy), never saw Joe again after graduation.

After a few years, I actually saw his dad, but that's another story.

In order to write this article, I searched for a different version of "Hey Joe". Of course, there are hundreds of versions of such a famous song.

Then accidentally discovered Charlotte Gainsbourg covered the song in 2014. Charlotte Gainsbourg is my favorite French actress. I have liked her for many years, from her husband Yvan Attal's strong self-referential film about a couple whose husband is an ordinary person and whose wife is an actress named Charlotte I started paying attention to her during the couple's movie "My Wife is an Actress".

Charlotte is pretty positive even in 2019. Source: Guardian

Charlotte Gainsbourg may not be the traditional definition of beauty, her chin is too pointed and her face is a bit angular, but I still think she is very straight. Then I really felt that French actresses are not normal people, only French actresses can walk around the forest without pants in such a confident and candid way - see Russ who won her the Best Actress in Cannes Von Trier's film Antichrist. And then all the actresses who worked with Lars Von Trier almost went crazy, whether it was Jasper Björk in Dancer in the Dark or Nicole Kidman in Dogville Variations. But Charlotte Gainsbourg actually made three films with Lars von Trier: "Antichrist" followed by "Melancholia" and "Nymphomaniac" which I love so much (I haven't seen this film, I watched Lars Von Trier's Movies require a certain amount of courage and psychological preparation for me, because I need to see him hate humans in movies, or, making movies is his way of venting his misanthropy and self-healing)

Charlotte Gainsbourg is both an actress and a singer - can you not be a singer when your dad is Serge Gainsbourg and your mom is Jane Birkin? She was only twelve when she first entered the studio, recording the infamous " Lemon Incest " with Serge Gainbourg. And isn't Balanciaga's classic bag called a Birkin? The origin of this bag seems to be because Jane Birkin just gave birth to Charlotte and complained that ordinary bags are too small to fit baby products, so Balanshaga specially designed this bag for her, which can hold baby bottles and diapers. Gold package.

When it comes to people and things you like, you can't stop. Well, listen to the song:
