The Necessity of Rational Dialogue|《Cold Thinking》

This experience has been rewritten several times, and I have not been able to find an appropriate way to express the book completely. I can only do my best, and leave the remaining parts for you to experience in the book.

If I could only pick one sentence as the soul of this book, I would pick:

"I am human, and nothing human is strangely foreign to me."

It fully illustrates the most important qualities and attitudes in rational dialogue. This book can be said to be an observational record, discussing the increasingly brutal speech of online users.

In recent years, there have been many civic issues, such as: gay marriage, the death penalty or the recent decriminalization of adultery, etc., which have been discussed very vigorously on the Internet. I wonder how you feel when you read the comments below?

Usually, people subconsciously refer to this kind of discussion as a "debate" or a "debate". No matter which kind it is, it has the idea of winning or losing in it. There are winners and losers, who wants to lose? But winning is blinding, and we start to examine where our opponent might be wrong, prove him wrong, until he's speechless.

Does proving your opponent wrong mean defending your own point of view?

The world is also too complex, and people use a variety of techniques to reduce the intellectual burden. One of them is the concept of condensed, such as "time management master", which can represent a story. "In other words..." This kind of comparison technique is also simple and easy to use. People also like to categorize things, including other human beings, especially the rise of social media has reinforced this feature, when you say something positive about a political figure, you may be labeled blue, green, or other possible Label.

These are all human natures to understand things, but can they truly present things as they are?

Regardless of our will, we all become part of a certain circle, with a certain ideology, in other words, the "stratosphere." Internal people and things will profoundly affect our thinking, just as people cannot live alone, people can't actually think alone. "Belonging" in layers is a dangerous temptation to give up thinking in order to belong, or to attack outsiders to elevate it.

Does your community have a positive attitude towards dissent?

The above is not a new phenomenon, it has already begun in the era of movable type printing, and the speed of human evolution cannot keep up with the progress of science and technology. Those intuition biases are always quick to hijack our fingers and mouths, and can't wait to respond the first time, but we don't always need to do this, wait five minutes, like the first contact, without prejudice To listen, why does the other party think so?

Finally, we must always be skeptical of ourselves.

"You have to be willing to look at yourself honestly, examine the motivations that make you believe those things, and basically keep doing it." - Wallace

And, don't be afraid to change your mind.

Let's be brave together and understand ideas that were never accepted before!
