do you know?

There used to be a country built on a "big platform at sea" with an area of only about 400 square meters, erected by nine iron pillars.

On May 1, 1968, an unnamed Italian engineer "Giorgio Rosa" established a country on the high seas 11 kilometers off the coast of Rimini, Italy, declared independence and assumed the presidency. It is called "Rose Island Republic".

A recent work on Netflix, "Rose Island" (2020), is based on this true story, the legendary artificial island at sea, and the short-lived story of the founding and subjugation of the country as the background. The Cannes and Berlin actor "Elio Germano" plays "George Rosa" in the play. In the film, his motivation for creating "Isle of Roses" is romanticized by the screenwriter: the reason is just to make The beauty was convinced by his determination, and also had a bit of a madness to prove her.

why not?

However, in fact, "George Rosa", an Italian engineer, was just an ordinary engineer before establishing "Rose Island". He graduated from the University of Bologna with a degree in mechanical engineering and has his own job, wife and children.

Until May 1, 1968, he became a strange and weird person in the eyes of the world. Why did he do it? According to the writer and director of "Sydney Sibilia", in the early stage of making the film, "George Rosa" visited him many times before he passed away at the age of 92. When asked why he wanted to create "Isle of Roses" in the first place, "George Rosa" simply replied: "Why not?".

Is it romantic or sad

Why is it called "Island of Roses"?

Because the Esperanto rozo (plural rozoj) and the Italian rosa (plural rose) both mean "rose", and Giorgio's surname "Rosa" is spelled -Rosa.

According to him, it was because: "I want to see roses blooming at sea."

The plot of the movie describes "George Rosa" as a sullen person with a strong straight masculine temperament. Although he is a genius, he is always "deviant" and is regarded as a fool or a weirdo. In order to prove himself to women, in order to want his own ideal freedom. Therefore, "Rose Island" was established because roses symbolize romance. The island is full of freedom, there are carnivals, there are parties; but it is also inevitable to face storms. However, the adventurous behavior of "George Rosa" even made it to the United Nations for the sake of independence and found a chance to be reviewed, but obviously this annoyed the "Italian" authorities. Although according to international law, Rose Island is set on the high seas, no country should be able to speak up, but the Italian government took the existence of "Rose Island" surprisingly seriously, tried to threaten and lure, and finally used military force to get rid of it.

The meaning of freedom is in everyone's heart

In fact, it may not be appropriate to attribute the birth of "Rose Island Republic" to "fantasy" or "romance".

In the 1950s and early 1960s, the process of industrialization and urbanization in Italy was extremely rapid, and it ushered in a period of rapid economic growth known as the "Italian Economic Miracle" in the world. A large number of people moved from the agricultural south to the industrial north, and the power of the Italian working class developed and expanded rapidly. It seems to be thriving, but such excessive development has also caused the problem of "the gap between the rich and the poor and uneven distribution" that also occurs in most industrialized countries.

By 1986, the year "Island of Roses" was established, the United States was fighting the Vietnam War, the "May Storm" general strike in France, the Cultural Revolution in China, and the liberation movement in Latin America. The various New Wave films that followed, the unleashed rock music, the uninhibited hippies, such trends also affected "Italy", on November 8, 1968, Milan, Bologna, Imola and In Barry and other places, there have been student movement waves one after another.

The "Hot Autumn Movement" broke out in Italy. Students held rallies and demonstrations demanding reform of outdated education models. Later, workers also went on strike for increased allowances. The conflict keeps escalating. There have been bloody clashes between police, students and workers in major cities in Italy. In southern Italy, some people even used explosives to destroy schools.

Later, railway workers, civil servants and teachers also joined the strike, the national railway system in Italy was paralyzed, the delivery of mail was suspended, and there were no students in schools. Even the functioning of the state apparatus has come to a standstill. The movement continued until 1969 and intensified. As many as 5.5 million workers were involved, and they caused 302 million hours lost (source ISTAT).

At that time, the whole Italian society was in an extremely chaotic atmosphere, mad, frightened, and dazed, while some people were desperately trying to find an exit. Thus, "George Rosa"'s "Rose Island Republic" came into being. This is the embodiment of the "Utopia" in his heart. Perhaps it can be said that he hopes for a free hippie spirit, or it may be "George Rosa"'s silent but fierce resistance to the social state of the time. And soon, he got a response.

After the establishment of the "Rose Island Republic" in the movie, the application letter for becoming a citizen of the Republic flew quickly from all over the world like snowflakes, which happened in reality.

Although the island was eventually bombed by the "Italian" military, ending their dream of freedom.

Summarize

Why build this island "Why not?".

This liberal idealism touched many people, made Italy regret it, and shocked the world.

"George Rosa" died on March 2, 2017.

Before his death, Italian divers fished up a brick from the ruins of the Republic of Rose Island at the bottom of the sea and gave it to him solemnly.

What is freedom? Is it fantasy? Or actually act? Maybe a small shrimp can't fight a big whale, but during the time you fight for freedom, you are free. I believe that during the time "George Rosa" and his friends were in "Rose Island", they did get rid of the social chaos and the injustice of the system, and established their own "Utopia". , There is still a lot of color, and I don't regret it for a lifetime.

Netflix's "Rose Island" is a historical adaptation of the film, which is worth watching and recommending everyone.
