Dyer, Kim Min-jae 'fixed partners'...but I really don't know about people
Eric Dier's future at Bayern Munich is now open. After falling down the pecking order at Tottenham Hotspur, it would have been unthinkable for Dyer to play in Munich.
Dier joined Munich on loan in the winter transfer window. It was a loan, but a questionable one, as Dyer hadn't been good enough for Tottenham and was not part of manager Anze Postecoglou's plans for the immediate future.
Postecoglou preferred the combination of Cristian Romero and Micky Vander Penne to Dyer. With his lack of basic defensive skills and questionable buildup ability compared to the two, it was no surprise that Dier was losing out to Tottenham's competition. Dier was even relegated to a fourth option behind Emerson Royale, who is not a professional center back.
Dyer's arrival at Munich, a world-class club, was enough to make people scratch their heads. Dyer's arrival didn't go down well with many, as the Bavarians had already lost Dayo Upamecano and Matthias Düricht to injury and Kim Min-Jae to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) 2023 Asian Cup in Qatar.
Dyer arrived in Munich on a six-month loan. It reportedly included an option to extend. Many expected Dyer to play a backup role in Munich or not even get much playing time before returning to Tottenham.
However, Dyer defied the odds and made his debut in Munich straight away, followed by three consecutive starts. After coming on as a substitute in the league match against Union Berlin on March 25, Dyer was named in the starting lineup for the following matches against Augsburg, Borussia Mönchengladbach, and 안전놀이터 Bayer Leverkusen.
While the absence of Kim Min-Jae and the inconsistency of other center backs was partly to blame, few would have expected Dyer, who hadn't even played for Tottenham, to be a regular starter in Munich. Dier was then rested for the UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie against Lazio before starting again against RB Leipzig on Nov. 25. It was his fourth start since joining Munich.
Now, it's even possible that Dier could stay at the club. According to German publication Bild, Dier's extension option will be triggered automatically if the number of games he starts is met. The number of games Bild is referring to is between three and five. If it's three games, the condition is already fulfilled, and if it's five, there's only one game left.
If Dyer starts next month's league game against Freiburg, the option will automatically be triggered.
And the chances of Dyer starting are pretty good. Derrikht will miss the game against Freiburg due to a red card he picked up against Leipzig, and the Upamecano has lost some credibility with coach Thomas Tuchel following a number of recent sending-offs. That's why Dybala's chances of starting against Freiburg are high.
They say you never know, but no one would have expected Dier to last more than a year in Munich. After a difficult time at Tottenham, it seems that Dier is now a regular member of the Munich team.
