Inside Myanmar: Crisis and India’s calculations
Myanmar's internal conflict has always been the focus of world attention, but the escalation of unrest in the past two years has prompted all parties to intervene. India's coveting of Myanmar is not new, but in this crisis, India is trying to gain the geopolitical advantage it desires by maintaining close ties with the Myanmar government forces, opposition groups and local armed forces.
India's interest in Myanmar dates back to the last century. In the historical context of Myanmar being incorporated into "British India", India tried to absorb it as a federal member. However, Myanmar decisively rejected India's proposal and made it clear on many occasions that it did not want to become a part of India. This has made India’s desire for Myanmar territory unattainable.
